I hate ebay
« on: February 03, 2011, 11:18:25 AM »
I think the title says it all. Just made my first sale and the fees that they dump on you are crazy. Roughly 10%. Plus the paypal fees and the calculator giving wrong shipping info.

Don't get me wrong. I like "window shopping" like everyone else but as far as selling, it's a racket.

I don't like the fees either, and they are rather high for the work :P :P Ebay does.  However, I have been able to sell items that I never would have been able to sell locally at very high prices.  There is nothing like a worldwide market.  As far as the shipping calculator problem, I always enter the next higher weight, saves me a lot of headaches...Larry

CL and here are the best for sure.  Ive done a lot better on my part outs and still can give a decent deal. My shipping discount helps too.  i pass the savings along instead of raping people with high shipping cost.

I'd much rather sell here. I know I can always get an opinion on whether something I'm looking at is crap or not by the posts people put up. And lets face it, I may not know you guys, but it still feels like I'm selling or buying from a person with something in common.

I don't sell motorcycle parts on Ebay, actually don't sell any as I hoard most of my excess and the next higher weight saves me from the possibility of losing money on shipping-it does not rape anyone.  Even with the high fees Ebay is a good resource to get rid of one's excess and make quite a bit of money...Larry

I love eBay! But I tend to buy more than sell.

Start using a reserve and add 10% to cover fees.

Honestly, I think my eBay selling days are over. I will totally take advantage of some of the hard to find steals that come up on there from time to time but if I'm looking at parting with pieces of my bike, they will find a home here for another forum member to use.

Absolutely.  I'd rather give one of you guys a good deal than to try and squeeze every last penny out of a part by putting it on ebay.  There's just no incentive to make me want to go through the hassles.

Now, if a sand cast owners manual ever comes into my possession, I'm going to put it on ebay and finance a second home with the proceeds I get from it.   ;D

While it may be hell for sellers (I don't sell on it), it is the only place on the planet for such diversity. While it may have increased it's bad name over the years, you want a giggling pin for a 1921 Reonunto Deluxe with the twice pipes side by each option - there's only one game in town. And of the 860 transactions I have had on it only 2 ,and thankfully for low dollar items, have gone south.

If your patient - real patient, you'll find what you want for a price that you want. That said in the last 8 years since I've retaken up SOHC 750s the prices of parts has dramatically increased with the number of people now interested in them. I used to be able to get a mint - 99% at least front wheel for $25-$30. Now they are all going for a lot more and some are really out there. But again patience is a virtue. I now allow up to two years of eBay shopping prior to building a bike. Either the parts are too pricey, or in poorer condition. But I've never missed a part by waiting it out.
