Ah shucks, thanks guys. It was a great season and lots of fun.  ;D No number change unless they throw me out.

By the way TimV also won a 1st overall in P2 Light as well as second in P2 Mid Prod. Atta boy Tim.

Toni told some great stories of racing with all the big guns. Both she and Kathlene Coburn, two Canadian girls, (and there are others) kicked a bunch of doors open to make names for themselves. Last night Toni probably heard 100 times she should come out vintage racing with us. As long as it's not in P2 middleweight, I'm all for it.  ::)

My 6spd gearbox works very well, but I do miss shifts on occasion. My attempt at a remedy is threefold.

1) Because the 6spd CB360 shift drum cam has an extra detent roller slot (6 compared to 5) there isn't need for quite as much "travel" of the 550 shifter shaft. I machined a bushing to fit over the end of the return spring pin which will reduce both shifter shaft travel & drum rotation. I believe with slight over rotation the detent roller didn't always center in the cam slot and would result in a false neutral.




2) The cam plate seems to be a stamped piece and as a result isn't a smooth surface for the detent roller. Hondas rollers also wear with time and can become quite sloppy. I picked the best of the ones I had but wasn't really happy. The 550 main detent roller is only 2.3mm wide but the cam is fully 3mm wide. I decided to try 3mm wide mini ball bearing rollers so the rolling surfaces matched widths.

The larger CB550 roller's OD is more than 1mm larger than the CB360 counterpart, potentially not locating the drum into position as well as should be. So now the bearing roller OD is smaller plus it and the cam rolling surfaces were smoothed and polished as well. Both bearings are identical, but just pressed on a machined piece to enlarge one.







3) I felt a slightly stiffer detent bracket spring might help as well. I haven't yet tested the spring rate difference. The neutral roller spring is ok.




This picture shows some of the mods, the relocation of the shift fork shaft, (not centered in the old case hole) and the modified shifter shaft. It sure doesn't look like the intricate Honda manufacturing we're used to, but it works, and hopefully now will work even better.

Brent,

Nice...your racing machine and here you are going away and showing the competition a how to have their shifter on their modified CB550 racer shift as nice as your will. 

BTW, while many now recognize the thread as yours, would a rename be out of the question as it is a compendium of racing topics related to the class you race in as well as results and your blog/log of things you wish to share about the ups and downs and victories campaigning your beautiful CB550.
Just a thought.

Now if you really wanted to be in trouble, the rotary shifter drum design of some of the foreign market S90s were quite something... You could go from 4th to neutral in one shift... :eek  it could get ugly on a race bike over reving the motor.  But, there are a couple circumstances a design like that would be handy...probably not in road racing though. More dangerous than any benefit it might have.  Would be great to have that if you didn't use the tranny to downshift/decelerate for compression braking and rolled up to a traffic light stop and then could be back in 1st in no time.

Don't remember, are you having clutch issues with the power your motor is developing? What, if you tell that kind of info, is your bike dyno readings for rear wheel power?  Guess I need to search the thread to find out what you have done on the clutch and when you had to go heavier than generally available.  One of your race launches with a wheelie was definitely showing the power and gearing you chose for that track...no sign of slipping that time. Clearly you haven't had major issues that prevented you from winning, so you overcame them.

David, I use the later model clutch basket which is a bit deeper. With some shimming of the hub it allows an extra disc & plate, otherwise stock Honda clutch components & springs and no problems.

However one problem that arose from using a wider detent roller is that the detent bracket needed to be spaced differently to follow the cam correctly. As a result the clutch basket also needed an extra spacer to allow clearance for the mechanism. There isn't much room back there. In turn the clutch hub center was machined the same amount in order to install the mainshaft circlip. There are always consequences. :o

I posted this figuring someone might have advice on what improves (or worsens) this entire shift mechanism. I'm hoping this will help my own situation.

Have you been successful finding a new clutch basket?

Given the amount of snow flying in the NE in a few storms I imagine your orchards have had some maintenance. 

What kind of projects have you had going this winter?

Building any new street bikes or acquiring parts in the winter ebay season.  Certainly after Christmas and New Years things went flat on sales...people facing credit card bills quit spending.

Have a set of Joe Rocket Atomic 2.0 blue leather gloves that match your jacket...  How big are your hands?  They are 2XL but run a little on the small size.  I bought two pair and only one fits properly...even after dropping lots of weight.

Are you going to refinish anything over the winter? 
Slippery aero has a lot to do with wetted area and frontal area drag...

I wasn`t ignoring you David, I lost my computer hard drive with recent pics of the original clutch basket.

Colin Tweedy recently had some pics of his clutch basket refining. The damper rubbers certainly aren`t available and it`s obvious that was the issue with the basket I was using. The rivots were fine, but those damping rubbers were toast. I installed a spare I had and will try to source a new basket for improved damping. I did replace the damper rubbers in the primary shaft. (Someone here e-mailed info about a shop that had a new basket but I`ve misplaced it)

Bill my hope is shifting will be slightly improved from where we were...which was good. I expect in the future having new gear-sets made with better block style dogs would be wise, but re-produced for sale is something I`ll leave for you to tackle......in your spare time. ::)

The engine is back in the frame. Just deglazed with new rings but had Mike work some more magic in the head & ports.

A new box section swingarm is in the works, then hopefully good to go.
