first bike, fun and problems
« on: February 17, 2011, 10:46:47 PM »
Hey everybody I'm very new to motorcycles, ridden them before and worked on them but never owned one. I wanted something different so I looked up what was out there and basicly fell in love with the cafe racer look. I recently bought a 1972 CB500. I dont have much of a budget so I figured i can make or modify the parts and/or problem areas my self, I started with the rear cowl and seat section. last nifght I bought a gallon of resin for the fiberglass and when i was completely ready to go with my mold and all of the things I would need i find out that the resin had solidified in the can so now i have to wait to get more. I am replacing and modifying the whole entire wire harness, when i found the rats nest of wires behind the headlight in the bucket i thought to myself holys**t this will be a fun endeavor. So tonight I had purchsed the plugs I need to seperate the handle bar and light wires and indicators from the harness with just one plug and i realized i cant finish untill i get the clubman bars. So I'm ready to get to work and have more than half of what ineed but its the little odds and ends that are slowing me down. I'll put pictures up soon .

Hi Mikieg, welcome to the forum.  From my experience, resin that solidifies in the can can sometimes be liquefied by warming it in a bucket of hot water.  I have had success with this several times (that what happens when the resin sits for too long between uses)  Parts made with the  rejuvenated resin had held up well.
Good Luck.  pictures, pictures...
intrigued by the wail...seduced by the scream.

ention that the resin was "brand new" so does your idea work with that too, or was it a loss, i returned it and im waiting for a new can to come in. I'm not going to go all out with the bike at first i dont have any wheel so i want to get this going and do what i can first, i was a mech in the Marine Corps so i can wrench on it and do the electronic stuff but as for the fiberglass and paint i havent done that before so im reading all the posts i can to see what i should and shouldnt do.
