Trip Reset Thingy?

The odometer on my '75 CB550 is missing the knob the resets the trip mileage.  Does anyone know if a replacement is available?  I can reset it with a needle nose pliers, but now that the fairing is back on, that is almost impossible to do.  Maybe someone has made something that works.

This?  It's from the speedo of a '74 750.  The white stuff in the grooves looks like old paint.  And the set screw is a tad rusty.  It shouldn't be too hard to clean it up.  If you can verify that it'll fit you can have it.  I would imagine that the 550's and the 750's from those years shared the same gauges (or at least the same basic parts).  PM me your address and I'll try to get it out by the weekend.

I can confirm that the one pictured above is not the correct one.  I very kind soul here on the forum send me one just like that last week (Thanks again!) and it did not work.  I "re-engineered" it by taking a hacksaw to it and chopping off all but just the end with the set screw and MADE it kind of work, but it's far from perfect.

They are hard to find.  I've been looking for one for a year.  Most used speedometers you find also have them missing as well.   :-\

So, Kevin, do you still want to try it or do you want to keep looking for the right one?  Let me know by Friday morning (when I was going to send it out to you).  You're still welcome to it, I just wasn't sure if you wanted to have to hack it up to make it just kind of work.

I have one from a 75 550 and it looks just like that one. It came with the speedo which was in pieces but it looks just like the pic and matches the one currently on my bike. I can send it to you if all other avenues fall through. Just pm me.

the trip odometer reset peg on a 123 series mercedes will work - that's late seventies - early eighties 240d's, 300d's, etc. the peg looks good too - german design esthetics etc.
the peg inside diameter is wider than the honda peg, so you have to insert a piece of thin rubber tubing in the peg hole first, then thread it on - speedo stud is left hand thread.

Like many people on this site - I bought my bike with this little bugger missing too.  I looked for a bit when i first got it, but then finally gave up.  Seems like they are tough to get ahold of.

I have a quick question: if/when the piece can be found (or donated by very cool forum members), does it work just like putting pliers in there?  I mean, does the special piece offer some other type of access to a mechanism that resets it quicker, or is it always turn, turn, turn???

Drats! That's what I was afraid of.

You know, the look of the German engineered piece above looks like a electrical wire cap. I wonder if I could rig one of those to fit in there? This thread has me thinking all McGuyver....

Maybe it's been used on this site before, but I just tried the electrical cap (thing used to screw two wires together) to reset my trip meter. I cut the depth down with a dremel, and it fit right on there and reset it WAY quicker than when I once tried the needle nose on there.



I took it back off and stored it under the seat, but it seemed like it would have stayed on there if I had worked it in a bit more.

Now, once I get this thing chromed, I'll be all set....

I was inspired by this thread to finally attempt to do something about the missing trip reset knob on my 550. 

I've had a repair kit to replace a table lamp switch in the top drawer of my dresser for several years.  I never really used the lamp much in the first place so never got around to fixing the switch after it broke.  It's the perfect size, and even looks half-way correct as a replacement trip knob.  I reamed out the hole with varying size screwdrivers until it was a snug push fit on the reset shaft, then put a dab of silicone gasket sealer in to keep it from vibrating off.  It works great, so far, and I don't see any reason why it won't stay put.  It doesn't take much torque to turn the trip odometer, so it shouldn't work it's way off when used.  We'll see.
