Question about Mich., U.P. Waterfalls
« on: March 01, 2011, 05:47:04 AM »
I know we have at least one U.P. member, but I found no entry on our map. My wife and I spend at least a week each year in the western U.P. (Lake Gogebic). I tend to drag camera gear and spend time on rivers and around waterfalls, but in late summer, when we usually go, the flow is way down and, in some instances, next to nothing. We would like to head up for a long weekend sometime in the near future specifically to hit some waterfalls with the view camera. Looking for; snow melted, but rivers and streams still at fairly high flow rates. Any thoughts on when a good time for these conditions would be? We may not get any further west than Munising?
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Have you been to Bond Falls?  To tell you the truth Bob I don't know of that many in the U.P. but if you want to travel a bit further the Minnesota Shore of Lake Superior has probably the most accessible, best, and highest concentration of waterfalls of the Great Lake States.  Mainly it is due to the fact that the Minnesota shore drops around 700 feet in elevation within a mile or two of the Lake.  There are many many rivers and streams that flow here, the most well known are usually state parks but many that are small and nondescript have beautiful falls if you know where to look.  I just bummed these photos off Wiki as much of my stuff is slide or negative.  If you are interested I could show you some and provide info on the area.  I have spent a lot of time up there and know it well.  They flow well all summer unless we are having a real dry spell and because the watershed is quite small they can change in a short time if there is a heavy rainfall.  This is where I would spend a week with your camera.

The Canadian shore is also very spectacular but accessabilty is the problem.  In Minnesota it's right at your feet.  As an example, that last photo of Palisade Head....was probably taken about 30-40 feet from the car. ;D ;D ;D

Thanks for the tip srust. Yes, we have been to Bond Falls many times. It's just a short drive from where we stay each summer. It too flows all summer due to its flow being controlled by an upstream dam. There are quite a few falls in Mich's U.P. but the Minn. falls sound pretty nice. We will probably give them a try during our summer/fall trip. We have often thought of driving to Duluth anyway. ;)

+1 on the north shore.
If you ever do the circle tour of lake Superior you should check out Kakabeka Falls just outside of Thunder Bay here.

Lots of waterfalls up here the biggest and most impressing are the Tahquamenon Falls north of Newberry. Also some really nice ones right in and around Munising. Tahquamenon is good viewing all year long. The rest are best after the spring thaw-usually early April.

Thanks, just what I was looking for. Yeah, hope to check out the Munising falls, particularly Miner's Falls.
