I watched it live on CNN as it happened. Hate the feeling of helplessness watched way to many people get washed away.  :'(   

I feel bad for Guam they don't have that much elevation unlike Hawaii. Hopefully it wont be as bad.

Dang, been fixed to the screen watching this, that was massive! Boats chucked up on the land like toys and that surge inland must have killed hundreds. :o

I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Very sad news.  The waves have already reached us here on the west coast of the US, causing minor damage in harbors, but the damage in Japan is devastating.   My prayers go out to the people of Japan.

No Yamiya was not affected. its in Nagoya which is south of Tokyo. Nagoya did get a prolonged tremor with buildings shaking but no damage or flooding. Tokyo and north of this were not so lucky.

I think I need to buy another boat...FAST!
That's about the 20th quake along the rim of fire in the last month, they believe the Japanese coast has moved 2.5 metres!!!

My brother was commenting on how bad one of the boats was being tosseded about.  My comment was the people in the boat were better off than the ones in the house floating next to it.

Honestly, I was also thinking about Yamiya - received some great parts from them last year. But my worries are with all the people affected by this freaking tsunami. I've been in Tokyo for several times over the last four years and can't believe all the destruction I see on TV now. Have some Japanese colleagues over there working for Yamaha. Hopefully I will hear from them soon.

Things are not looking very good right now. Sadly, watched a detailed explanation of the fault slippage and there is a strong possibility that now that the stress has been relieved in this spot, it often transfers to spots a couple of hundred miles north and south of the initial location. This could be bad for Tokyo. :-\

As if the earthquake and tsunami weren't bad enough, now all the problems with the nuclear power plants!!! Some of what is being reported on the news about the nukes doesn't quite add up; I fear it may be far worse than what we are hearing.

6 meters is only 20 feet. I've been in close to that size chop on a 42 footer, and others call it a regular job to be in it. I've seen nearly double that on ferry boat rides.

It was the speed of the wave that differs from your experience, the waves were up to 10 metres when they hit shore depending on where you were located in Japan, there is a small fishing village further north of the worst destruction with 17,000 people, more than 10,000 are missing, they just found a 60 year old man 15 kilometres out to see on the roof of his house. You must remember when comparing a tsunami with ocean swells, ocean swells don't travel anywhere near as fast as a tsunami, some tsunami waves travel at 100's of kilometres an hour, that is why they are so destructive.....

Almost immediately after the earthquake and the giant rockfall of July 9, 1958 at the head of Lituya Bay, a massive mega-tsunami wave splashed to a maximum height of 1,720 feet on the southeast spur of Gilbert Inlet. The wave spread across the rest of the Lituya Bay wiping everything in its path on either side, over an area of about 4 square miles (10.4 sq. kms).



I still take being in a boat over being on top of a house when it comes to being out to sea.

From what I see of the video  of many of the boats being tossed about is that they are actually riding it out pretty good. It's just that the boats end up on dry land when the water rushes back  out. They behave like boats, can not do otherwise regardless of the speed of the wave.

THe local stories about the Lituya wave are around in Juneau.  Some of the survivors were still around  five years ago.

The biggest scary  thing about the wave  was not so much riding it up but when it fell out from under them. The boat fell off the wave and seconds after being up they were underwater looking at sea water through the pilot house windows.

 First the earthquake, then the tsunami, then the nuclear reactor problems, now the Shinmoedake volcano is erupting
 in southern Japan !!  What in the hell is gonna happen next ?!!  Is Godzilla gonna show up to finish the island off ?!!!
