caliper bleed nipple, what size thread ?
« on: March 19, 2011, 01:34:39 AM »
during a rebuild of my brake calipers one of the bleed nipples sheared off as it was siezed into the caliper body, that has now been removed by an engineering firm but the new bleed nipple, advertised as being suitable for my bike wont lead into the port.
the replacement nipple seems to be 8mm dia with 1.25 pitch but the threads in the caliper body look more like 1mm pitch.
Do any of you have some tech spec on what the correct size the thread should be so I can get a tap and clean up the lead threads into the port ?
The bike is a '82 CB650SC Nighthawk with twin piston calipers

Well I know that a CB500's bleed nipple is 1.0 X M7.  Not sure if that will help you but honda does like to keep using the same parts as long as they work.  My XR200 was basically unchanged from 1990-2002.
All glory to the hypno-toad.

Thanks guy's, Ive got the right part number that I quoted to the supplier, whether Ive got the right part is another matter.
I've measured the diameter from the remains of the sheared nipple and its 8mil, give or take a decimal point or so, the problem is the thread pitch, I dont have a set of pitch gauges to check this aspect. If someone has a spare or used nipple that they can measure up and establish exactly what the dimensions are I might simply need to chase out the existing threads, if Ive been sent the wrong part I'll tear them a new one   >:(
Hope someone can help on this

Sorry I do not have one to measure. If you do have to return it consider a speed bleeder. I was not so sure about them at first now they are on all my trucks & cars and of course the 750 ;)

Have you looked here?

That thread doesn't show size or speedbleeder part number for his ride.  If you can find the speedbleeder part number, you can then easily find the size.  I think that list has an error.  The CB400T '80 - '81 Hawk is listed with two different part numbers.  I don't think that bike should be associated to part# 43352-568-003.  Otherwise, the mystery would be solved.

OEM Part# 5109-300-003           ====> Speedbleeder SB10125 = M10x1.25
OEM Part# 45224-579-013          ====> Speedbleeder SB7100 = M7x1.0
OEM Part# 43352-568-003          ====> Speedbleeder SB8125 = M8x1.25
OEM Part# 45224-413-003          ???

Thanks for your input so far guys.
The part number for it on the CMSNL.com site is 45224413003, visually it's identical to the remains of the one that came out of the caliper, unfortunately it dont look anything like what I've been sent as a replacement

http://images.cmsnl.com/img/products/valve-bleeder_big45224413003-01_3bdf.jpg

this is what came out (in bits  :-\ )

its the part number that Bowlingball has a question mark next to in his last post

Ok, I need to pay more attention to the scale on my vernier caliper, the bleed nipple thread is 7 mm diameter not 8 so Im slightly embarrassed by that *&^$ up, however those Idiots still sent the wrong part coz I quoted them the part number.
3rd time lucky with the order maybe ?

You should be able to pick one up at the local auto parts store.  I needed two for a dual disc conversion and got the pair at NAPA for about $5 instead of $10 each from Honda.  I'm not sure what the UK equivalent to NAPA is, but there has to be one.  If you can take your remnants down to the store you can compare threads and look at what you're getting.  Hell, take the whole caliper if you can.

Good luck,

It's an M7 X 1.0.  The Speedbleeder pn is SB7100; add an S to the end if you want stainless.

Also, for minimal money (like $15) you can send your caliper to Speed Bleeder in IL and they will repair it for you. Shipping & labor are free. Just had mine replaced by them.
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

NAPA is a parts store that caters more to professional and advanced shade-tree mechanics than the boy racer types.  It's the kind of place you can get obscure tools or a piston for a '49 Chevy but not steering wheel covers and underbody light kits.  When I went to get bleed valves I had one with me.  I walked in and they asked me what I needed.  I held up the valve and told them "a metric bleed valve, 7 x 1.0, about this long."  One guy starts looking through his five foot long row of catalogs, the other guy walks about two feet into the rows of shelving and comes out with a metal box.  He opens the lid, scans the labels on the inside, and pulls out a duplicate of what I'm holding.  I tell him "perfect, I'll take two."  Catalog guy turns around and has a "yeah, well, there you go" look on his face.

I'm setting up dual discs so I actually needed two.  Maybe I should have bought a spare...  :-\

Hi John, I cant think of anywhere around my area like NAPA. there is a distinct lack of places to get specialized tooling or slightly obscure parts over here these days. even the breakers yards are so over regulated here it can be hard to come by decent seconds at a decent price, I can remember crawling about the breakers with a pocket full of tools taking off the bits myself and going to the old boy in a shed who had a petty cash box.

The speedbleeders come with a sealing compound preapplied to the threads, may have been what you were feeling.
