Installing a new tank
« on: March 27, 2011, 08:53:36 AM »
I picked up a new (to me) tank. It's impressivly clean. Very, very light surface rust on the bottom inside the tank. I wanted to put it on my bike that is running great with freshly cleaned carbs. Should I try rinsing the tank to get any "loose" rust out? And with what?

Thanks in advance.

You don't need anything to aggressive so try CLR in the silver jug.  Rinse with baking soda and water after to neutralize the acid.  It'd hard to get all the water out so I take a coat hanger with a rag on the end, holding the tank up at an angle and use it to soak up the last few tablespoons of water.  You can dry it with a hair dryer or put it a bit of alcohol to absorb what little water is left using the coat hanger to get this out in the end.  Coat the tank with some type of fogging oil or use right away.  Remove the petcock before you start.

Thanks Srust. I ended up pouring gas in from the tank that's on the bike and swirling it around. Then pouring it out into a catch can. The gas looked really clean and the tank looked about the same so I decided to role the dice and see how things go.

Clean your petcock screen tube it should take care of the bigger particles.
