cb750 k1 kickstart repair
« on: March 28, 2011, 05:47:03 AM »
hi guys,

i just got a 750 k1 as a new project (not finished the K2 though...:-))

the bike was parked by the Po in 1982 with 13,000 miles and was running. The kick starter was not working so the PO always used the electrict starter. (the engine turns).
The kick has  a problem, it will go down freely, not engaging anything inside.
what could the problem be? anything I can repair without taking the engine off the frame?

thanks

Its likely the pawl or spring on the kick start mechanism . You need the engine out and the lower cases split to work on it .

Most people use the electric start anyway. If your electric starter works I would not mess with it. Heck, if the electric start goes out just give it a good push and pop the clutch to start it. I see to many people split cases, etc. and end up with more problems than they started with. Have fun with your new project.

Could be a pawl or such. My experience has been with broken KS shafts. Usually with high compresion motors, using kick only starts. The shaft would shear in 2.

In either event, it is an engine tear down, though it can be done leaving the top end intact. Remove the engine. Remove the lower case side covers. Flip the engine upsude down. Remove the lower case. Fix the KS. Reverse the disassembly. COuld be done on a saturday.  Other than chasing parts.

What would be the risk of keeping it as it is (assuming the engine does not need any other repair)? any risk of loose parts inside? anything I can check from the side engine covers?

thanks

A broken shaft is no problem, everything stays right where it is, except the lever of course. Do you have it tied up somehow?

AS to pawls or other internal pieces coming loose, I've no experience with that. But my guess is at worst it would fall down to the sump pan and stay there.

You can just take that kick start off if it gets in the way until you decide to tear into it.

Read this.
A while back I picked up a 78 750F, tried to check compression, kicker was limp, I was pissed
Then in Feb in a cold snap, I had a few days where the kicker on my daily rider froze and did not work.. I would bumpstart it. and then it would work again

.....................................................................
So I am thinking, if you strip out the clutch and cover, you MIGHT be able to get at the ratchet and pawl, and lube the snot out of it, or free it up.. IF.....IF the spring and pawl are still in there. But I am not sure it can be reached or done, but it is worth looking at.
If anyone has a engine with cluch basket out, maybe they can take a look for us?

it seems then that to access the spindle(?) you need to dismantle form the top end then...?

No, you can get to it the way I described. Flip it over and take the bottom off. The first pic is right side up. The second pic is upside down, the spindle is assembled into the top case.
