CB400/4 Rear shocks
« on: March 29, 2011, 04:51:21 PM »
Having now got more used to riding the 'new' toy a 1977 CB400/4 I realised the suspension settings were too hard.
When I checked though they were at the softest setting, even with a mate aboard as pillion we couldn't deflect the rear end by bouncing up and down. then after I stripped one of the units down I found the spring can only be compressed with a heavy duty spring compressor.
The units fitted have the name YSS on the label. The springs appear to be very new and look incorrect.
I'm currently looking at Hagon as replacements.
Does anyone have experience of suitable reliable units ?
Thanks in anticipation.

Hagons are nice enough. No damping adjustment but spring rates are selectable as is preload. I have a set on a 400 four and they fit and look nice.

Hi again,
I saw a pair of Koni's advertised and after buying  them, fitted them to the bike.
What a difference !
I've had several rides on the bike since then and after getting used to just how small a machine it is, I'm really enjoying it.  ;D
The next job is to manufacture a small rack to carry a tail bag for a flask, Tyreweld, sandwiches and other bits too big to fit under the seat. I've fabricated pannier frames and racks years ago for other bikes - I just need to ensure that they're not over engineered. :)
