Good Place to Canoe in the Dallas Area?
« on: March 31, 2011, 10:44:03 AM »
My wife and I are trying to plan a canoe trip with some friends in TX and Dallas is about the middle of the road between us and them. I've never canoed in TX so I have no clue where the good water is. I think they want to try for sometime in June. From growing up on the Ouachita River in Ar, I've met a lot of Texans who come to AR to canoe, so I haven't heard the greatest things about TX rivers. Someone please tell me there are some good rivers. We'll need to rent boats too, so links to rentals would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Check out the Brazos River about an hour west of DFW.  I did the section below the King Possum Dam and it was nice.  You can camp on the sandbars.  This was many years ago so any info I have is way out of date.  The water level is controlled by the dam so do some research on what section appeals to you.  Further afield Big Bend is really cool but it is more an expedition than a casual trip.
If you are a serious canoe tripper come up north and try the BWCA/Quetico for a real wilderness trip sometime.

Buffalo, anything in the Ozarks are hard to beat for good floating.

Thanks for the info srust58. I'll look into that.

ISD, I love the Buffalo and the Mulberry up here in N.W. Ar! The Buffalo seems to hold it's water longer than the other rivers, so I usually float it later in the summer. The Mulberry gets some sick white water at times! That should be starting soon. ;D

Out toward the area Mineral Wells (Brazos River) - not too far from Dallas.

We usually start with these guys:  http://rochellescanoerental.com/

Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Illinois river near Muskogee- Talequah OK is a pretty good one. Nothing too exciting unless you go duting a good rain, then you can be in the tree tops and a much quicker float. Blue river into Lake Texoma is a quicker drive.

I don't know how far you want to drive from Dallas, but Caddo Lake is east of there in NE Harrison County.  I spend a lot of time out there.  My parents live out there, and I was pretty much raised on that lake.  I can't think of a prettier spot to canoe and spend time!  Just do a Google search as there is a lot of information on the web.

Tree fiddy, I've done that float over in Talequah. Only thing I didn't like was that the campground had all sorts of tweeker fight/drama going on. I even pulled my cooler in the tent to make sure the beer was safe. The river was nice though.

ff, I'll look into Caddo Lake. Sounds nice. Thanks.
