Back protectors
« on: April 10, 2006, 04:23:53 AM »
Are you jokers using a back protector when you ride?  For about $50 these things protect your spine from grinding on the ashphalt if you spill it, stop your spine from bending the way it shouldn't bend, provide warmth around your kidneys and the velcro gut fastener holds the belly in so when the babes walk past you look like you did 20 or 30 years ago!!....TC       ;D

My ballistic nylon riding jacket came with one, although not as fancy. It's just a stiff foam pad that fits in a pocket in the back of the coat to give your back a bit of a cushion from an impact.

Doesn't do anything to improve my physique when wearing it, though... :(

Same here.  Loads of armor inserts in the back, arms, etc., but not the full, stand-alone back protector.

I have a KNOX back protector.  I don't use it much anymore, but when I did it was great.  Gave good back/kidney support and was pretty comfy.  Its alittle tight in my jacket now so I don't use it anymore. Very good quality though.

Hey Heff, and here I thought I was the only one to carry my office with me ;D.  My old leather has the belt and kidney patches but not the back, its still so stiff though that it could have, (15 years old). :)

Yup, same here.  Everyday back & forth to work.  That's why I have the luggage rack.  I also changed out the rear blinkers/taillight...I'm working on mounting some throw-over saddlebags and the blinkers were in the way.  I wear the armored jacket & gloves, but there's a limit to what I'll wear when heading into the office.  Big, clunky boots don't cut it, but I'm trashing my shoes.  Trade-off's.

Track days in Canada most clubs (Ducati owners club) have it as a must

Even if you have a built in protector you must also have also have a "strap-on"

They check you at pit exit, no "strap-on", no track time

I think its because most guys in the club are "grey hairs" , they just want the old bones to be protected

Hey Heff, it might do the trick but why not use a laptop designed for such use?

I just got a riding jacket and while it is not a solid panel, the pad goes from the tail to the top. It does flex but is relatively sturdy.

I like all the adjustments I can make to the jacket to tailor it to my size. Never could do that with my old leather wich sucked to wear anytime it was over 70 degrees.

I thought about protection over the winter, and decided I was riding on borrowed time.  I figure if I tangle with another vehicle, I'm probably toast.  However, the odds of going down on a bad turn or slipping out on something seem higher.  Columbia jackets may be warm, but offer nothing in the way of protection, so I grabbed a couple of used jackets for cheap (~$20 each).

One is a Nexgen mesh with built-in armor and leather skid panels and insulated liner.  Hasen't been warm enough to use this one yet.  The other is a Firstgear textile with built-in armor and leather skid panels, but no liner (I just use the Nexgen one).  Both jackets' armor include long back plates.  I also picked up some armored gloves (with a spiffy, but conservative Honda logo on 'em!).  The gloves were new, and the jackets must not have been worn more than a couple of times.

I hadn't really thought about a separate back protector.  Of course, with my wife nursing a broken vertabrae from a car wreck, my thought are drifting this way pretty quickly.  How much protection and/or support do they offer?  Comfy or a necessary evil?  What to look for or avoid?

I got a mossi vantage jacket. I am sure some will say this is junk cause it didnt cost $400+ though. It fits good and has multiple layers of balistic nylon and the pads are pretty large.

Eldy,
I looked that mossi jacket, it looks pretty good to me.

I've also been looking at the Fieldsheer line of jackets and pants. They seem very resonable in price and seem to have nice features.

I like leather but it seems hard to find a leather jacket thats reasonable in price with nice features. I'm also concerned about the warmer months coming up. I don't like the heat all that much to begine with and the thought of being cooped up in a full face helmet and a lether jacket makes me cringe.

I like the saftey I feel with the full face helmet and don't think i'd give that up. But I think I could give up on the leathers for a more breatheble modern material if it offers nearly the same safety.

Well the jacket has multiple layers that look very tough. I feel it will work as good as leather and be MUCH lighter and not nearly as stifling in warm weather. It has a large vent on the back and under the armpits to allow air flow. It also has a zip in liner that goes into the sleeves to help keep you warm when it is cool out. You can adjust the waist on EACH side and the arms have straps on the forearm, bicep, and under arm to tailor the fit a bit more. It even has a zipper at the lower back for the pants they have!

I have been very happy with it but have yet to wear it in any temp above 70. It does fit very well with my full face and my gauntlet gloves.

I've been looking at the jackets at newenough.com

I like the features of a lot of the jackets- but I just can't get past the styling!

Why oh why can't they make a good, protective jacket that doesn't look like I'm trying to pose for a Marlborough racing ad!?

I like the Icon "Daytona Vintage" jackets..  Got my eye on the blue one- if only it wasn't for those patches.  I wonder if I can remove them without too much grief?

I agree! I looked at one of the Daytona jackets at a local dealer yesterday and basically walked out without it because Icon hasn't proven their quality to me or paid me enough to advertise for them.

I really did like it though. Seemed well made overall and had a nice fit to it.
