Electrical question 6v to 12v
« on: April 10, 2006, 05:22:47 AM »
I have an electrical question.

I recently picked up a CM200T for nearly nothing and it doesn't run right now.  The job looks easy to get it running, but I have a question.  The bike I got is a 1980 model, which is a 6-volt bike.  I have a bike wrecker near me with a few CM200s, but I think they might be the later 12-volt bikes.  How hard would it be to drop a 12v engine into the 6v bike?  I am not making this bike street legal, so there will be no lights, horn or indicators.  I ask because the 6v was only for one year, then they went to 12v and I'm willing to bet the majority of parts out there are for 12v bikes.  I want to have some spares around to include an engine maybe, but it'll probably be a 12v engine.

I just compared the parts fiche between an 80 & 81.  The left crankcase part numbers (alternator housing) are identical with the actual alternator part numbers different. I wonder if you could'nt just rip the electrical guts out of a 12V motor and swap it into your 6V motor?  Obviously, the harness and the rest of the electrical would have to come with it.  The cylinder and miscellaneous other casting parts have identical numbers too.  It seems to be the same engine with a different alternator.

Might do that since the alternator is not good according to the PO.
