Sorta new owner in SoCal
« on: April 03, 2011, 08:31:43 PM »
Hi all,
A little background.  I actually got this bike in 1998 or so from a co-worker. It was a full dress with a full Vetter bag set and fairings. He was afraid to ride it, so I got it cheap. If I recall correctly, the only other mod was a Wiseco 811 kit. I made a run to the local bone yard and found the parts I needed to return the bike to a mostly stock configuration. Even better, it was free, I just traded the bags for the parts I wanted. Then, I took the seat pan to the local upholstery shop and had them make me a copy of Corbin seat. I had the bike for about a year and had a few other bikes taking up my time and energy, so sold this to a friend. Well, I was talking to him last week and he asked my if I wanted the bike. I said heck yeah, and picked it a few hours ago. Can't wait to start playing with it, but I have a few other projects to finish up before I start with this. My plan leans towards a Cafe Racer, which is what I wanted to do originally. I was on the sohc4 site back in 98. Not sure if it's the same one now.

Sweet pick up, and re-pick up, welcome to the forum (or welcome back?).  Where in SoCal are you?  Are you aware that there's a major SOHC4 relay taking place right now and will be passing through our area at the end of April?  I'm in San Diego and am riding up to Joshua Tree, out to Willow Springs Raceway for a leisurely lap, then out to San Luis Obispo.  Should be a great couple of days. Check it out here!  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=81365.300

Wow, it looks like a lot of fun. Unfortunately I'll be out of town during that time frame. Even worse, I live close to Willow Springs and even used to work there. If you want any help on places to stay or too ride in the area, let me know. I've ridden most of the roads around here.

Actually, we are looking for suggestions on a place to crash after running the track @ Willow.  Also looking for the best route west to San Luis from there for the next day.

Excellent. I have a few ideas. I'll get you some info in the next day or two. How much fwy/canyon time do you want?Or total tim on the road?

Driving wise, we were looking at a balance between highway and twisties.  I was thinking up to Victorville then down the 15 for a stretch to Writewood, then over the Angeles Crest Hwy into the San Fernando Valley then west to the coast.  It's looking to be an 8 hour day or so that way, which might be pushing it.  Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Are you looking to go from JT to Rosamond or Rosamond to SLO? If the latter, the path you posted is WAY out of the way. I'll have something in a few minutes.

Here's my idea with the following assumptions.
1. You're arriving at Willow Springs after coming from JT and spending the night after riding the track.
2. You leaving for SLO the following morning.

Hotel Recomendation: Homewood Suites on the 14 fwy near Jethawks Stadium in Lancaster at Avenue I.

Leaving for SLO:

Head west on Avenue I. Go left at 110th Street. (opportunity to go up Ave I a little further and visit the Poppy Preserve)
Take 110th Street into the hills. Changes to Johnson Rd then to Elizabeth Lake Rd. (Opportunity to visit the Rock Inn. Well known biker stopover and has great Tritip sandwhiches.)
Just past the Rock Inn make a left on Lake Hughes Rd. Stay on until the 5 Fwy. Go south, exit 126 west towards Ventura.
In Santa Paula, go right on the 150 to Ojai. Just past Ojai go right (north) on the 33 towards Maricopa. This will drop you out on the 166.
Go left (west) on the 166 to the 101. Hop the 101 north and you're about 30 miles from SLO.

Fuel Stops:
Lancaster
Lake Elizabeth
126/5 junction
Santa Paula
Ojai
Cuyama/New Cuyama on the 166
101

Dude, that's absolutely perfect!  I had a feeling that was the general direction, but that solidifies it.  Wish you could join us, but there will be more opportunities for sure!

Yeah, me too. That ride looks like a blast. Just prior, you'll want to run the roads through the caltrans website make sure there are no closures.
