Hey Everyone!!! A lil' bit about me and a question . . .
« on: April 11, 2006, 08:05:20 PM »
Hey everyone, I just joined the group yesterday, but I've been reading up on FAQ's and posts for a while. This site is one of a very few that actually have good info for us sohc4 Honda guys.  Ok I got my bike last summer for $300 from a cool guy in Saginaw. It's a 1973 CB500 23,000 with king/queen sissybar seat on it and came with a fairing and hard fiberglass bags.  I'll include a pic of what it looked like on day 1, it's pretty bad  ;)
Anyways, I like to consider myself pretty engine-friendly . . . got my 1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby-Z in the low 13's on street tires ;)     but anyways,  Thought this would be a fun project to keep my mind off college n' working.
The bike was pretty torn apart when I bought it so putting all the little pieces in the right spot was a hassle; however, I got it running!   guess that depends on your def. of running  ;D   Now here comes my question:
The bike runs, but the carbs like to pee out the overflow tubes, like many of you guys have experienced.  I tried the tap tap method, re-adjusted the floats yada yada. . . . now, please don't hold this against me, but I think I found the problem tonight!!!    Remember, this is my first time working on anything with less than 4 wheels in my life . . . . On the rack of carbs there is a "T" that goes between 1/2 and 3/4  . . . there is also a smaller brass nipple thing that connects them and feeds out on carb 2 and 3.   I think the "T" is the gas line, and the brass nipple guys are another form of overflow tubes because they feed into the top of the carb bowl.    Please correct me if my intuitions are wrong.  I believe I mistook the little brass guys for fuel inlet, and the big "T"s for some sort of air vent/vac that fed into the valve/tappet cover vent barb.
Ok sorry about such a long post, just wanted to say "HI!!" and double check my idea. None of the manuals I read covered something as stupidly-simple as where to hook the fuel line into.  ??? If I had it hooked in the wrong area, I cant believe the thing actually ran. . . but it did!   Haven't tried hooking up to the "T"s yet though, that'll be tomorrow morning.

Even though you are a Mopar fan, you are still welcome to the board .
1st tip I can give you, don't listen to a thing that DusterDude has to say.
Just like your Mopar wiring, it's all messed up ..........

Whats the deal with this Chevy bashing again.  I am a Chevy guy but also have nothing against Mopars.  It is Ford bashing that I like to see. ;D

 ???

Completely confused over here.

We have "Chevys" that are just Daewoos with a different badge!

Their TV ads say "after all, it's a Chevy", to which I can't help but reply "no it's not - it's a Daewoo"!

Wow, I'm glad I started a car discussion on a bike forum lol . . . . Ford's are pretty bad, epically the mid 80 5.0's. . . they are sooooo slow its funny, but the guys who drive them think they're cool  ;)   I have a stack of white time slips from racing 'stang boys (when you win the drag race you get white slip, loose: carbon-copy yellow slip).  so yeah . . . . anyways. . . I got home from school and swapped the fuel line fiasco around, it started up but doesn't want to idle right. Maybe I fouled out the plugs so that's the first thing I'm gunna check.

Went to the local parts store: they quoted $35 for front disk brake pucks and $33 for rear pads. Hmmm . . . maybe I'll try getting them offline. What'd you guys think? AlSO-  have any of you had experience with the aftermarket 4 into 2 pipes that I have in the picture? the seem to be the ones alaways going on e-bay for $200.  They don't want to go on right, even though the numbers on the pipe are on the correct cylinder. They sit too low to bolt up to the rear bracket. Hmmm, I hate exhaust work (and suspension for the record).    Oh yeah, they also had materials to install stainless steel braided brake lines at my local shop, thinking about that too. . . Alrighty. . . This weekend: new plugs/points/condensers, dink with the exhaust pipes and maybe cough up for brake supplies. Thanks for the warm welcome !!!!

-ps- Say what you guys want about chevy 350's, hemis or whaveters . . . . NOTHING beats smoking a brand new 'vette in front of your friends with a junkyard minivan engine in your $500 '87 daytona ;)
