State Inspection in TX

Who knows whether a 1977 CB needs to be state inspected in TX? I talked to the cafe racer guys here in Austin and they said everything 1980 and earlier does not need inspection. But I also called a shop that does inspections and they told me the opposite. Thanks for any insight.

I live in Houston and I have never had an inspection and have never had a single problem.
I am sure if you ask, you will be told you should have one, but I doubt you will ever get
ticked if you don't. The only time I HAD to get an inspection was when I was registering
a bike with an out of state title.
Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.

I know I need to get inspected for my out of state title transfer crap.  I will get around to that sooner or later.  After a cop yelled out the window to inform me my taillight was out the other night, I don't think I have to worry too much if I'm not being a jackass.

Yes you will need an inspection.

If you register the bike normally you will need an inpspection.  CycleRanger has it right. ;D

Just make sure it stops, horn blows and all the light work as they were designed and it will pass.  Oh yea, you will need to show proof of insurance before they will even start.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I know I'm not supposed to do this but....   Mine is registered as an antique - you only have to register it every 5 years that way.
The catch is:  You're not supposed to drive it everyday.  Only to shows etc.

I haven't ever had mine inspected.   That said, I haven't ever been stopped by the police either.   I have had police several officers take a look
while it's been parked and ask about it - just never asked about the inspection.

I know there is some conflicting info floating around - the tax office actually told me that if it's registered as an antique in doesn't require an inspection.
I think they are wrong - I just didn't want to put the ugly inspection sticker in my freshly polished forks.

I think if it's shined up really nice & purdy, they'll more often than not overlook the lack of inspection.  If it looks like an everyday driver, I'd probably go ahead and get one.

What are the benefits to registering it as an antique bike?

I need to register mine but I bought it from out of state so I'm not sure what I need to do.

An out of state registration will pretty much always mean an inspection.
But usually it is to check for major safety items and verifying that VIN numbers match the title.

That is the one thing stopping me... my horn only works when it wants to. Think they could look past that?  :D

(How do I know this?  I have my had my '40 Ford PU and my '67 Mustang  registered as antiques for years.)

That is correct.  If you are registered as an antique, you do not need to have inspection and you are limited to how/ when you can use it.  That said, I have ridden my bike to work everyday this week that it wasn't raining and I have never been hassled.  Got a waive from a cop, but no questions.  I used to run my Ghia as a daily driver with antique plates and I have several friends that do it on daily driven VW's. As long as you don't ride/act like a jack-ass, there are no worries.

As to the advantages of antique plates... you only have to register every 5 years and you don't need inspection!

Wow, 10 replies in 40 minutes, seems like a hot topic! Mine is an antique, and of course I only ride it once a year, since I also have the Harley  ;)

I called and confirmed, registering as an antique bike will not need an inspection even if out of state.  ;D

Yes, you're right about antique plates, they usually won't hassle you however I wouldn't recommend registering as an antique solely as a means to avoid a safety inspection.
I have my CB registered as a "Classic", which still requires a safety inspection.
Bottom line is don't sweat a bike safety inspection in Texas. If it won't pass you probably should fix what's failing anyway. ;)
