78 CB750 630 to 530 conversion
« on: April 14, 2011, 05:17:16 AM »
So I want an 18 inch rear rim on my '78. Question is what do I need for the conversion. Was thinking of getting a 18inch rear rim off Ebay from like a 75-76 750k and then ordering front and rear sprockets and a chain for the year of the rim I get.

Does this sound like a reasonable path to take?

thanks,

rob.

I don't know if there are any implications with the diameter of the tire/wheel (kinda doubt it).

A 530 sprocket (from K6 and prior) has a wider shoulder where it goes on the shaft relative to a 630 sprocket but the spline pattern is the same.  Also, the 530 sprocket is held on with a retainer and two bolts.  The 630 uses a big washer and center bolt (on K7s and K8s).  I believe folks have done this (530 front sprocket in place of a 630) but understand that when doing this, the washer holds down the sprocket but does not make contact with the shaft (530 sprocket is wider at the base).  On a 630 installation for a K7 or K8, you'll notice that the sprocket and shaft are flush... the washer makes contact with both of them when the bolt is tightened down.  There may be 530 sprockets available that have a narrower shoulder at the base but I've not seen them.

As a related note: the original 530 setup on these bikes allowed the front sprocket to float a little (jiggle room on shaft... not mated firmly to shaft).  The 630 did not.  Realize you are "un-floating" a 530 sprocket and as I mentioned, folks here have done it with apparent success but the Honda engineers either changed their mind about whether sprockets needed to float or 530 sprockets (in their minds) should float.

The rear sprocket should be a direct swap.

530 on the left and 630 on the right.

I think you will find that it had more to do with the 630 chain being stronger than the 530 at the time, this is different now as the lighter  530 chains are much stronger than they were in the 70's....

That makes sense.  My guess is that it would be perfectly fine and if I didn't buy a 630 chain before learning more about the Diamond chains, I'd be running a 530 on my K7.

thanks for the replies guys. Mainly I just want to run an 18 inch rear, since these seem to only come in 530 I was gonna do the whole swap on my bike. I'm watching a wheel from a 72 750 on Ebay. I checked the part numbers for the hubs on the 72 and 78 and both have the same part number , so I'm guessing i'll be fine.
All I'll need to fiddle with I guess will be the front sprocket and getting the chainline and clearance right.

Thanks again for the help!

Get an 18 inch wheel, switch sprocket carriers and you can stay 630 if you like.  It's real easy to switch sprockets on the sprocket carriers.
