Thnxs 754,

Idler will be moveable by excentric, so can change tension or remove belt easy.

Wow!  very cool!

Whats the reasoning/benefit to using that alternator setup over stock?

Yes it really!

To your question, to go fast guys like Rob, they need that ground clearance on the left side. Allows fairing to tuck in.

Any other reason, Rob?

Main reason is ground clearance:

Other is that the oem alternator is 40 yrs of age. The one I use here is much younger, has the rectifier inside, etc.

So would that be a streetable mod? Run in the rain, drive a headlight and charge the battery? Or is it ignition only?

Would be 100% streetable mod. I use it on this endurance racer, and thus rain, lights etc all needed.

Yikes! I'm in, sort of, depending on price. But I'm comparing it to the CR750 setup KOS was selling some time ago. So probably your price would be all right.

No hurry, distant project. But I'm very interested.

Very nice Rob, should do the trick and doesn't have any hard to find / replace parts.  Just what you want on a race bike.

Rob, you might want to consider adding some thin flanges to the outside edge of the pulleys to prevent the belt from "walking off". Any idea of power output at idle speeds? I forgot what size alternator you settled on..

Thanks again,

@Scottly: I can add flanges to the pulleys if necessary. But if all is lined out properly it wont be an issue. As soon as the bike is running again we'll know. Power output at idle should not be a problem since this is a alternator used on earlier Suzuki's.

Are you going to put a cover / guard over the all, or part of it Rob?  Would think tech would require it, just like a belt drive on a BSA / Norton / Triumph.  Something to protect the crank end would probably be a good idea anyway.

I put a sleeve over the oil hole and made that round cover to hold the seal, then the end piece to somewhat protect it. My buddy was crying that the end had to be covered, I said I amnot that worried about it. 30mm throats in those DCOE,s.. I got those in the late 70,s

In order to improve on the aerodynamics ordered a Rickman style tophalf fairing. Should give us some advantage on top. ( I hope)

Sure does look nice.
