blinker blowing main fuse
« on: April 17, 2011, 05:52:39 pm »
its a stock 77 cb550k.  i just charged the battery and let it sit for a few hours, it check out at 12.55 volts.  i put the battery in  the bike turn the ignition on but not running and the voltage starts at 12.55 v and counts down slowly.  i turn the left blinker on and it works perfect, front and rear bulb light and flash accordingly.  as soon as i turn it to the right blinker the main 15 amp fuse blows. i recently went through almost every wire and clean them. i have no loose wires that i know of.  any suggestions on where to start with this?

also, is the rear brake light housing sealed?  i didnt want to come off when i tried removing it and i didnt want to crack it.

You need to check the light blue wires for the right turn signal, make sure that there is not a short in the front or rear.  If the system worked before you cleaned the wires, there is a chance you made a mistake reconnecting, but pay attention to light blue...Larry

I have a solid black and a solid green wire coming from the right blinker. Also when I cleaned my contacts I did not go into the rear blinkers or brake light

+1 Larry!

Question?? What has recently changed? Why is the right signal now not working/blowing fuses? What work have you recently done on the bike - electrical or not - or is this a new bike to you? Some background info would sure help with solutions.

alright i made some progress.  i found that one of the wires coming from the front right blinker was pinched under one of the pieces that holds the fork tubes and the wire was exposed and grounded.  i wrapped it with electrical tape and NOW i dont blow a fuse when i turn on the right blinker BUT the rear right blinker only flashes, the front right does not flash.

as far as recent changes are on the bike.....i did adjust  my voltage regulator over the winter time to help with charging.....ive replaced my fuse holder from a doner bike.....thats about it.

Great news? Any idea how that wire got pinched?
Simpleton question... have you tested or replaced with a known working bulb with the bulb that isn't flashing?
Does it even light up as it should as a running light?

Lefty

Turn sigs need a good ground or they will do crazy things.

I "lost" the LF turn sig. I was told here to run a "Popwood Ground". I did so (very easy to do) and haven't had any more trouble with the turn sigs.

Just a thought for a possibility.

Ok I'll look into doing that. Yes I have swapped bulbs,  The running lights work so obviously the bulb isn't toast and it was pinched because there was too much slack in the wire
