how does the fork lock work?

been trying and trying to get my fork lock to work...no dice

so my question is how does the fork  lock work?

Put the key in slot and turn to the left and push up. Once up turn key to right and pull key out. The tumbler will stay up to engage the frame stop. Be sure the key number on the lock is the same in case someone changed out the ignition switch.

Also, the fork needs to be all the way to the left or right when you lock it for the pin to engage.

Works just the same to the right, I never tried it to the left.

Hm... my key won't turn to the lock position with it turned to the right or left. So I'm thinking its broken

Like Johnie said, it's possible the ignition key is not the original.  Do the seat lock and ignition use the same key?  It's also possible the lock is frozen in place from lack of use and age.

IF it is like a '77 550F, you have to push down on the key (IE toward the lock) and then turn the key to the left to engage the lock.

(I, too, haven't ever tried it turned to the right!)
