Yamaha FZR250 steering woes

My son seems to collect these little pocket rockets, this is number 2 this year! Anyhow this one had a steering bearing issue so I dropped the forks and lifted out the triple tree.
I did this to find out how many single roller bearings the top and bottom races held, turns out it is 19 top and 18 and a half bottom!
Yep when we got them out one was in two bits, now what the heck would cause that?

I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Those are sweet little bastards though. Suspension mods are very popular on the fzr250 and 400's

The AFM (a club racing organzation in California) used to have a 450 proddy class, the fizzer dominated. There are probably a few AFM'rs on their forum with a bit of FZR knowledge.

Done the steering bearings easy as but the forks just would not part so I took them to my local bike shop who managed to get one apart and after a few days got the other but now they seem to have lost one of the small damper springs.
I mean how the Hell do you lose a customers parts?
They tried to tell my son that one of the forks must not have had a damper spring in it!
Duh they have not been apart since the Yamaha production line in 1988 and I'm betting some rider might just have noticed the slight steering problem before now. >:(
