There is nothing visibly wrong with the valve train, but the cover had me puzzled.  Looks like the aftermarket tappet hole caps need to be removed to get the cover off.

Hole caps also scraped some of the beautiful blue frame paint, as you can see.   I am devastated  ;D

I certainly would be.  You must be heart broken, maybe time for a couple Pilsner Urquells?...Larry

Scored engine stand on local CL for $20, now I need to make a CB750 adapter for it.

It's a rare occasion for me to stop at a garage sale but that's how I got mine for $15!

A couple of triangular braces on that would make it feel completely rigid.... Just saying, that many inexpensive engine stands suffer from the wobbles once they have an engine hanging off it.

The opposed upright is a good idea too!

I will see how it goes, will be changing the bottom tube - the "I" of the "T" - for a longer one today to have more space getting the engine on.

But when the time comes for the 258 inline six to hang on it, I will definitelly brace it some more.

So it starts, yesterday we had several hours long rainstorm and I used it to work on the engine.

The rottisserie works somewhat, but because of the angle of the original side, it should have actually a U-joint to turn over better.

But it will do for now.

I recall you divulging the story about the floor boards, but seriously, don't you want to put a full catch cloth underneath for the disassembly?  :o

Honest, that's the way I found it  ;D

Crappy picture, but the lift plate had missing corner.   There was nothing wrong with the clutch function either.

Some aluminum grit in the oil pan, that's all I found.

Head looks good, or does it?  Planning to do a leak test just like this to have a benchmark.

Nice progress.  Some scary P.O. surprises I see you have uncovered.
It is disappointing to find poor maintenance and hack jobs.

Did you manage to install the new support so it was directly opposite the center of the shaft for the rotation.
Nice work.

Yes, I did, but the top of the original stand is angled up, I may figure some ball joint from the pile of scrap I have to make it work better.

Anyway, I suspect the clutch lifter was installed cracked and gave in after a while.  There is some damage to the cover, but nothing excessive, it will hold.  You can see the little notches in reinforcement ribs.

How do you get out the spring pin that holds the kickstart shaft? Number 9.

I wish I knew the history, like how many miles on the engine.  Some of the dogs are worn a bit.
