IPod backup
« on: May 21, 2011, 11:54:34 am »
I am looking for a program that will allow me to backup my IPod library that is less intrusive and time consuming then the methods SJ has provided.

My 29 gigs of music consists of 95% copies of my cd collection. the remainder the infills I acquired from Steve's mind monitoring service...

When my computer went down this spring I was caught untrained in the intricacies of SJ policing of the digital music world and only the stuff I hac bought from Apple would restore, nothing from the IPod without loosing all the labels and organization I had spent many hours accomplishing.

I have tried some of the freeware products and found them all lacking.  before I spend money on something I would appreciate the benefit of others!

Thanks

Mark

I guess ancillary to this question is if I use a good backup program that backs up the data on my hard drive, when I restore will Steve accept it and run as I had it set prior to failure?

I assume you're using a PC.

Did you try any of these?

Unfortunately, the play list, labels, etc. information is stored in a file in your music folder on the computer, not the iPod.

If yer just hatin' iTunes in general you might check this out:  http://www.getmiro.com/

Don't blame Apple for your failure to backup your computer.  ;)

PC yes.

I backup across my home network and just restored the files from the network when I needed to reload windows. I keep my data organized to allow quick transfer of new CAD and other files quickly, although it takes quite a while across the wireless. I have two extra large drives in my desktop.  :P

The problem I found is the restored data would did not format with names and playlists in Itunes,  basically obliterating a year of putzing around in Itunes.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will look those over, do you use them?

http://www.copytrans.net/download.php This one's seems to have gotten good reviews. $20 for the full version, or you could always engage in criminal aquatic activity and find a torrent.

I use iTunes.  I had a drive failure recently myself but I was able to retrieve the data.

iTunes keeps the playlist data in an XML file in the iTunes folder.
If you lost that info you need to reindex the music files.

You probably have lost the playlists forever but the song info should be in the mp3 files themselves.
