Harbor Freight Chain tool on a 630?
« on: May 23, 2011, 03:21:43 PM »
Anyone know if the cheapo $15 Harbor Freight chain tool will work on a 630 chain?

It says it will work on a 530 chain, which should be the same width as the 630 right?

I'll probably just go and buy one and post the result.

What chain tool? 630 is a little tougher than 530. There are chain breakers, chain press, chain pullers. what tool are you looking at or for?

probably this:  http://www.harborfreight.com/heavy-duty-chain-breaker-66488.html

To remove the chain you can just use a dremel or similar tool to grind off the rivet heads.
It's staking the new master link that's the trick.
It doesn't look like this tool has the right taper to stake the new master link.
But it's certainly cheap enough to try!

Okay so I bought it and removing the old chain was easy.  Ground off one side of a rivet, pressed it out from that side.

Haven't installed new chain... which uses a master link setup, so won't know about if it can stake a new rivet or not.  Seems like could be done with a couple of hammers if push came to shove though, no?  Old school hammer & buck setup?

There's several other videos demonstrating using the tool to install the new link.
