cyl stud torque specs help
« on: April 21, 2006, 06:39:16 PM »
I've got a '77 CB750F2 from which I'm about to pull the motor to try (again) to fix the fact that it's PISSING oil. This will be the 3rd gasket kit in 1 year. It was recently suggested that I replace the cyl studs while I'm at it. Something about Honda making the originals out of silly putty or some such material. I just bought the cyl studs from APE and I'll put them in with a new Athena gasket kit and hope for the best. Anyone know the torque specs for these studs? I have the '70 CB750 F3 shop manual that lists the specs for the head bolts but what do I torque the new studs to into the case?

I just put Blue loktite on the threads and screwed them into the case until they were seated firmly. The torque specs for the head nuts are higher than spec'd in the manual, Ape provides those specs with their studs. Over 1000 miles and motor is tight as a drum(F2).

There are 4 studs that are blocked at the base with rubber seals(F2 motor). All 4 of these studs snapped when I tried to remove them. Be prepared to take your bottom end into the machine shop to remove these pesky studs.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

I don't think there is a torque spec for screwing the studs into the case. . .I guess you could double nut them and use your torque wrench but you mostly need to make sure that they seat completely.  Follow APE's specs for torqueing the nuts.  Be careful not to snap off the old studs when removing them. Double nut them, and also grip them down low with vice grips.  Have a second person use one tool while you use the other.   Overall, its a bit of a PIA getting the old studs out but the chromo studs do seem to help with the oil weeps.  Good luck

If you use APE studs the torque spec for the studs is 8 ftlbs.

8 ft lbs in the case, 20-22 lbs at the nut.
