CB750 rear sprocket and disc removal?
« on: April 22, 2006, 03:46:24 AM »
1977 CB750F1:

How does the rear sprocket come off the rear wheel?  I have removed the rear wheel - the sprocket is held on by several nuts and 2 plate washers with tabs that fold around the nuts.  I flattened the tabs and tried loosening the nuts but they won't budge.  Are they reverse threaded?

And the rear brake disc - I removed the nuts but the disc won't come off - is there anything else holding it on or does it just need to be knocked away from the hub?

If you've got all the nuts off, then it sounds like your disk is just stuck in place.

Use gentle hits to free it up. Hit one side a few times, then the other (just so that you are not pounding on just one part of the disk.) Just be careful, though. You don't want to bend it at all.

Thanks KB02!
Does anyone have advice on removing the sprocket from the rear wheel?

They are regular threads, so your nuts must be seized, a usually painful condition.  The doctor prescribes heat and penetrating oil, then call him in the morning.

...yep, penetrating oil, and do you have a breaker/cheater bar?  To many guys out there try and remove bolts without using good leverage.  In case you don't know a cheater or breaker bar is just an old pipe you can slide on the end of your ratchet that will allow you to get another 12" or more of leverage.  I've even lot one thats about 4 foot long!  Either the bolt is coming off, or the screw is gonna break...one or the other...

Thanks for the advice - I have oiled them again and will let it sit overnight.  To be attempted again tomorrow!

Got the rear brake disc off - thanks for the instructions - it needed some gentle persuasion from a hammer.  No luck on the rear sprocket nuts - and I can't get the front sprocket center nut off either.  I did manage to break my ratchet while giving them a good heave!  Working in a garage space with no electrical outlet so no chance of using an impact wrench.

Is it best to put the rear wheel and chain back on and when the bike is running I can bring it to a garage and get them to take them off or does anyone have some final tricks?
