Northeast members, real salvage yard?
« on: June 11, 2011, 07:56:54 AM »
I grew up keeping family [and later my own] vehicles running by visiting local junkyards with my father.  He worked when he was younger at my grandfathers junkyard/garage/gas station.  To me there is nothing like walking through the yard, well-trained eyes picking out the exact perfect part among the chaos, or finding gems from other makes and models that will make you project that much sweeter.

Monologue aside:  Where in the Northeast can I find a motorcycle junk/salvage yard that I can still walk through at leisure and pull my own parts?

Question is in bold in case people wanted to skip my family history, haha.  But is there such a place?  If not in the Northeast, then what is the closest? Maybe between here and NC [will be driving down and back in Aug.]

Any help is greatly appreciated.

This prolly isn't close enough for you, but K&R Cycle Salvage (607-699-3937 or 800-593-3937) has done well for me. They're about 1 hr west of Binghamton, NY:

They don't have many intact bikes, but they do have an entire warehouse of parts they've stripped -- with lots of SOHC4 parts.

In my opinion K&R salvage is like a Mecca of boneyards.  If you go there, get there early plan to spend a lot of time.  There is stuff there that is hiding and sneaky.  Go through it all.  Make sure to check out the seized (?) engine yard out past the trailers  I am kicking my self for not going there every month.  I think I'll go there in July just to visit.

Thank you for all the responses.  My folks live up NW of Syracuse, NY, maybe I can take the long way next time I visit...

Hell, if it is that much of a Mecca, might just have to make a weekend of it alone.  For those of you that have been there, how are their prices?

I've always found K&R's prices to be very reasonable, but It's the only bike boneyard I've ever been to, so I can't compare. I've definitely saved lots of money by picking up parts there.

Hey Burma, have you heard about Kenny's Norton and his near death experience while running from the cops on it?    He swears by his estimate of a commandos' top speed.....

If ya go see Kenny at K&R be ready to have your ear talked off, that man can sure talk.

was just down there a few days ago, only live about 40-50 miles away.

his carb racks are overflowing with carb sets, has a room about 40 ft long by 20 wide with just exhausts in it,parts everywhere you look, its like a bikers heaven.

If you are looking for a specific part it will help if you bring the part your trying to replace, not too much is really marked with what it came from,ya just have to know what you are looking for,if ya cant bring your part bring a clear pic to reference just in case.

and bring tools, small stuff like pliers, screwdrivers,or whatever you may think is neccessary for what your looking for. dial calipers,or the electronic kind will help ya too if your looking for axles, none of them are marked, just a big pile on the floor.

all in all its a good place to spend a day searching through all the stuff.

Highly reccomended.
