CB750 cylinder 1 TDC, tappet covers off...how do you know?
« on: June 14, 2011, 09:35:14 AM »
In my quest to properly adjust the cam chain tensioner on a '74 CB750, I removed the points cover and rotated the engine to "T" mark, and removed the tappet covers for cylinder 1 (on my left as I sit on the bike, right?)...now what am I looking for?  Nothing under the tappet cover seems to move freely.  I rotated the engine again and got the same thing...nothing moves freely.  Could someone give me a description, or better yet a picture, of what should move freely at TDC for cylinder 1?

Thanks for any advice.

What you need to start with is TDCC, the second C is for compression. If 1 is on compresion the tappets should be lose. Cyl 4 will be TDC also, but on overlap and its tappets will be firm.

To get TDCC on 1, turn the crank forward and watch the intake tappet go down. When it comes back up start watching your advancer for the T mark on 1-4, you should be close and won't have to go far. That will be TDCC for 1. If the tappets aren't loose, they should just barely click, slide sideways back and forth just a skosh, then those valves are tight and that's not good but nothing you cn do about it now except make it right. You can also adjust #2EX and #3IN as they will be on their base circles of the cam.

Then do number 4. Turn the crank thru 360 degrees, agains watching for #4 IN to go down and back up. When it stops moving up, you are close to TDCC for #4. Adjust it and #3EX and #2IN.
I'll get you a picture, as I just set my valves and my rocker cover is off the engine.

The clearances are only 2thou IN and 3thou ex so there won't be much movement, but it should produce an audible click.

If I am understanding this.  Once you get tdc for 1, I can adjust 1 And not have to turn the crankshaft at all and will be able turn adjust 2 exhaust and 3 intake. Then once that's done I turn crankshaft to get 4 at tdcc next. I adjust 4 and without turning crankshaft I can adjust 2 intake and 3 exhaust and then it's done?  This the same process for a 550?

Yes that's right for a 750.

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be the same for a 550. But I'm not a 550 guy and don't have first hand experience.
