Float Bowl Gaskets
« on: June 19, 2011, 08:15:24 PM »
Need to order a set of float bowl gaskets for a 77 CB750k. I found sets listed for 69-76 that look like the ones I need, and sets listed for 77-78 that DO NOT look like the ones I need. What's that about and where can I order a set I know will be the right ones? Any help is appreciated. -Chris

I am beginning to suspect that I have some 69-75 carbs on my 77 bike...

cphlegar:Tell us the numbers on the side of the carbs and you won't have to suspect any longer. Should be something like PD42a

Not on the side but on the front sort of lip that meets the stay plate they read 7A JB. And I've checked out schematics on several different parts sites and these are clearly not the carbs for the 77 model. Seem to be 76 or earlier.

Can you post a picture of them? Are they KeiHin carbs look at the outside edge of #4 card just above the bowl gasket on a raised rectangle for the numbers. Are the tops round or like a keyhole?

yes, they are KeiHin carbs. they are round on top. no numbers on the side though. i've taken them off and completely apart to clean so I know they do not match the 77 schematics. will try to post some pics tomorrow. thanks. -chris

Don't know what CR means, but pics of carb rebuild kits for 69-75 look just like all the parts I saw when I had them apart. Did 100 miles today around Houston and only minimal leakage with the gaskets I made :) Still need to figure out which are the proper ones and order them though.

Yep, your carbs are the older type and 69-76 type rebuild kit/bowl gaskets are correct. Be careful when mating the bowl to carb that the gasket stays put and does not bow-in any as the floats are mighty close to the sides of the bowl and can foul on the gasket ( and make the carbs overflow ) if its not seated just right.... a small smear of Vaseline on the gasket surface might help with that..... good luck.
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

How does this happen?  My '75 CB550K has '77 PD46A carbs.  This could turn into another PO thread. . .

It happens because some prior owner thought that the older style carbs would be superior or had problems with the stock ones and a good older set on hand and decided to swap in the old set rather than rebuild the stock ones.

I meant: How do we end up with bikes powered by engines fitted with carburetors from another year model?  Cphlegar has a bike with older carbs, I have a bike with newer carbs.  It would be fascinating to see a complete documentation of the past lives of both of these motorcycles.  My bike also came to me with an ill-fitting tank, a Honda tank from a completely different bike.  The bike had beem out of registration for so long that the DMV could find no record of its existence.  Had to have it inspected by a sherriff's deputy and re-titled from scratch.

It was worth the effort, though.  What had been a rusting relic is now back on the road, with a lot of help from people on this forum.

It's called buyer beware. You (as the rest of us) won't make that mistake twice! Now that you've been through it before, you will know what to look out for.

EDIT TO ADD:

Take what a PO says with a grain of salt. You can't spell POS without PO!

Looks exactly like the carbs on my 75 750....

... and although I could be wrong, I do strongly suspect that I have carbs from a 75 750 ;-)
