How deep is the #$%* that i'm in ?

Hey guy's I think I found a Pandora's box on the bike.
Did an oil change to get ready for the run around the world with godzilla, didn't change the 1.50$ crush washer ... tighed the screw abit to much and the pan crack ....  >:(
Took the pan out to get it solder and this is what I found ... a lot a metal shavings


the orange piece look's like glass ...


I'm suppose to change the head gasket at the end of summer, cause I got a leak but I'm I obligated for a complete tear down and rebuilt??

I didnt see anything, you didnt either. add new oil and erase this post!

Might be nothing other than slag left from the casting process. Do any parts have machining marks?  How many miles on the engine?

Oil flush and change. If there haven't been any issues up till now it may be an old issue that has sorted itself out. lol

Seriously, is there any indication of where it may have come from?? I seen metal flakes in the oil of old bikes that had sat a while. If the engine was empty but not sealed you can get corrosion on the inside walls that flake off into the oil. Just a thought.

I would wait for one of the pro's to chime in before you do anything drastic.

Pieces of plastic from the cam chain tensioner.
The metal is from the cam chain chewing into the tunnel.
Or it's something else altogether. ;)

Not a bad idea when you pull the pan is to put a magnet to the bits to see what is aluminum and what is steel,plastic etc.If it is running well finish the job and ride. You will know when something is really wrong.

Seriously, though, when was the last time the engine was apart? I would pull off the oil filter and tear it apart to see if anything is in there. If your filter is clean, then follow the advice above and put in fresh oil and filter and run it a bit, then pull off the pan to see if it is an old problem or an ongoing one. I might agree with CycleRanger, though upon first glance about it being a dead cam chain tensioner and shaving from a wild cam chain.

I don't know when of if the engine was teared down but last oil change I did was 5000km ago.
I just freaked out abit when I saw this in the pan, I think I'll do like you said run itc 1000km and take out the pan again just to be sure.
I'll make sure my mechanic check out the cam chain guide and tensioner.

And try not to use RTV to seal pan when you reinstall it.  ;)

this. steel is really bad. aluminum is not as bad. plastic is negligible.
