Misc. K2 questions
« on: April 29, 2006, 03:48:39 AM »
Hi all, I've been lurking and searching for awhile and haven't turned up answers to all my questions.  I bought what I thought was a pretty original CB750K2, but upon some research and closer inspection I have found it to be "tampered with" and neglected over the years and its presumably many owners.

Here are my questions:

Sidecovers, They were plastic from the factory I assume?  Did the original units have honda markings on them?

Sidecover badges:  Were these also plastic? Did they have Honda markings on the rear?  The "ruby" badges I have have very similar imprints (the faint circle at the top) to some NOS items I have seen on ebay, but these, and the "750four" badges are plastic. They are not original, but I am trying to establish whether they may be OEM NOS or not.

Honda Tank badges, My bike had the badge holders "bogged in"  The tank is being stripped, and the bog dug out so that the tank can be repainted and they can be replaced.  I have found a pair off a CB175 which appear to be identical to the units on a '71 CB450 I have already restored.  While I realise they may need to be painted differently, are they other wise the same metal badges?

Paint; I know this question has been asked, time and time again, but I have yet to see a definitive and easy answer.  Firstly, before I say it, don't cringe, I plan to paint my K2 Honda Candy ruby red.  While I realise this is not an original colour, there are aspects of my bike that detract from it's originality, and I prefer this colour, I believe it to be suitable from a period sense.  The paint code R-4C, I have found is available from PPG, but it is a single application, rather than the red over silver as original, and the paint year is listed as 87 so I doubt it to be the correct paint.  After searching through countless paint swatches, I found Honda Hero Red, which is a red over silver paint.  Has anyone tried this colour? , did it look like the original? , it did on the example, but I am led to believe these can be notoriously inaccurate (although apparently the glasurit items are actually painted and are quite good).  I intend to chase up a second tank and covers, and treat them to one of the original K2 colours, however I'm unsure what the bike originally was, as I have only found candy ruby red on the tank and sidecovers while stripping.  I assume the tank is off an earlier bike (not wrinkle), it and the sidecovers had been repainted in a tacky blue metallic, the sidecovers I assume are repro.  Is there any way of determining the bikes original colour?

Cheers, John (Australia)

I don't believe there is any way to definitively determine the original paint scheme of a particular bike (i.e., based on VIN #). If you are looking for an accurate candy-red, try sending and eMail to [emailDONDIRTBIKER@EXCITE.COM ][/email]. He has been selling paint kits for the early Hondas for some time and I've never heard anyone say they were anything less than pleased with the results.

Hi, thanks for your reply.  Is it possible that any K2's were Candy ruby red?  or was this colour definately finished with on the K1's ?

John.

Bob - What does he charge for the paint kits?  I would love to put my 550 K0 back to the original (albeit slightly ugly) orange

I seem to recall it was somewhere in the $100 +/- range, but best to shoot him an eMail to get the real skinny on price.

Yeah, I've sent the email.

Once the tank is properly finished It will be repaired and primed, then POR15'ed.  I agonised over whether or not I should do this, but there is some evidence of rust in the tank, and the bike may end up sitting for weeks or months during winter without being ridden.  I can't find anyone saying anything bad about this product and I can source it here in town so I think that is a done deal ;)

I intend to get my "decals" from   http://www.reproductiondecals.com     they certainly look the goods, anyone tried them?  I intend to have them cleared over a couple of times once applied.

John.

Certainly feel free to go ahead with the entire POR-15 process. I started down this path with my K0, which by the way actually has a K2 tank on it right now. After the degreaser/cleaning and the phosphoric acid treatment, the interior looked brand new. I didn't use the third step liner. It's been two years and mine also sits 4-5 months during the winter, still looks great. I try to keep it topped off with fuel, particularly during the winter-over period. I do put some fuel stablizer in the tank prior to winter, though I seem to recall a recent post by Hondaman not to. I competely drain the carb bowls though.

I will be gettting tank decals from reproductiondecals also shortly. I've always seen good comments about them. Good luck and post pics at some time.

Thanks Wheelie.  I had spotted that and took the relevant part no's to the local PPG reps, as suggested in an article, lubritech no's mean very little to modern paint manufacturers.  Although it was handy in order to confirm the red over silver application.  I am also deviating from original in that Intend to 2 pac paint this bike in lieu of the original acrylic, as I will ride it to work, and I want the paint to survive out in the sun.

We did my 450 in acrylic, and it's great for obtaining a show finish on a bike, but not practical for everyday use.

Hi again, anyone got any answers on the sidecover material, and badge material questions?  I know it's probably obvious, but It's best to ask.

You will be very pleased with the decals from reproductiondecals. I have three sets from
them now and they are first rate.  I have both the tank decals and the repro Honda bike
decals.

Also Don makes a great paint kit.  I have one that a commercial painter is using now to
repaint all my sandcast parts....with an extra tank thrown in.  I was going to try painting
it myself, but getting the rest of the bike done is enough effort....especially seeing as how
I have never painted anything smaller than a house.  ;D
