newb brake question: 77 master cylinder upgrade?
« on: August 03, 2011, 09:02:06 PM »
Hi everyone, sorry if this has been addressed before but I couldn't find a direct answer through the search function.

I recently purchased a 77 cb750 and would like to improve the front brakes.  I already have a braided line and have rebuilt the caliper and master cylinder, but I'm coming from much newer bikes and am accustomed to a little better stopping power.  I've considered a dual disc conversion but was hoping for something easier/cheaper.

Will most metric master cylinders bolt up easily or is there a certain year/model I should look for?  I've been looking at used CBR MC's since they are relatively cheap.  I understand old bike = old performance, but any guidance would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Thanks, I did that when I rebuilt the master cylinder and the caliper.

Edit: I also replaced the pads and all seals, complete rebuilds.

Did you notice a difference with the 929 mc?

I have spoked wheels and could add a second disc though I would need a new master cylinder for that project anyway.

Sure, let me know what pics you would like, I also have pdf format instructions somewhere, jasonstr_2000@yahoo.ca is my email. drop me a line and I will send a few photos and see if I can get my girlfriend to scan the printed instructions and send that too. It's a worth while swap, slight difference in the rain the drilled rotors are 96% just for looks, I guess they do dissipate water a little. I don't do too much rain riding and my bike is slowly coming apart for a restoration.

@ the tech J

The parts I'm talking about are the disc, the caliper, the stainless braided lines. ( the ones I found on ebay are made here in Canada in Toronto and just as good as anything a shop can make) brake pads, stainless steel caliper pistons found on ebay for $40 each, and they are perfect. Also the doubble banjo bolt, copper crush washers, and the speedo drive as well as the caliper seals and caliper bracket. I bought all the stuff to do my conversion There are two guys who make the speedo drives both are nice, and priced well. One guy is on here rangelov I believe is his name.
Yes you can grind down the stock drive and make it work, but I found the fifty bucks for the drive these guys make just makes a pretty job of it and its easy since I don't like to grind anything.
