I like this band Built to Spill a lot. They have a bunch of good stuff, but I thought I'd post this song up so you can hear a long song with instrumental break. I don't think they're a band that would end up with a "free bird" type of popularity though. I think it would be harder now days to have an "anthem" song because there are more bands, or at least more ways to hear all the different music from around the world.

I'll second built2spill - they have a great version of Neil Young's  Cortez the Killer.

Really, check out My Morning Jacket - They are still relatively new to the scene.

Off their new album Circuital - Victory Dance.    smoke whatever you like and turn it up to 11.  It builds and builds as many of their songs do.

For the generation just past grunge - RadioHead   The Bends - very anthem like.   Stick to the earlier albums - OK Computer should be on everybody's ipod.
The newer ones are much more electronic.  Still great.

2nd for Radiohead AND My Morning, both solid picks in my book.  If you want some rockin' bluesy tunes throw on The Black Keys, not necessarily "anthem" related but damnit they rock.

+2...

I sit on the brink of your age requirement...30th is here this month. I'm into Led Zep, Jimi, The Doors just as much (if not more than) most of the "new music" these days.

I dunno if I could pick out an anthem, but the Black Keys certainly fit the genre. I've never heard 2 guys rock so hard. Saw them live last year and was blown away...definitely worth a listen if you want modern music that clings to nostalgia rather than pop trends.

I know this doesn't fit the time length rule for your definition of an anthem, but I'd definitely consider it an anthem of my generation (I'm 35).

Weezer - Say It Ain't So

I'll try to come up with something from the past 20 years that fits the requirements.

I had to come back after digging thru my mental playlist for an anthem for the OP...

Smashing Pumpkins - "Starla"

11 minutes and an amazing instrumental that should qualify...maybe ;)

Metallica has recorded some solid anthems through the years. Sanitarium, Fade To Black, For Whom the Bell Tolls, One and a few others. Their newer stuff sucks balls IMO. Down, Clutch, C.O.C., Pantera, and Slayer have all written 6+ minute long "anthems" that I will always love and listen to.

Has Iron Maiden been left out of this discussion? This is a shorter song, but it can't be forgotten!

I don't know that anything from the Stones as originally written, is an anthem. All short pop formats. They may play them longer live, but that doesn't count.

I just built a playlist on my iPod (should be working) of what I grew up with as "anthems". Like Free Bird, Layla, Whipping Post, American Pie, Green Grass and High Tides, China Cat, Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder, Heard it thru the Grapevine (CCRs long version), Flood Down in Texas, Do WHat You Like. (Blind Faith), Ah, Jessica!

You know stuff like that. Lyric rich, or at least very musical. Without the attitude, the anger, the banging around.

Do the kids today have anything like that? I mean do they shuffle up to the stage and yell the equivalent of "FREE BIRD!"?

I asked a kid that was working for me 10 years ago (25yo, tattoos, etc) to put me together some CDs, which he did. I tried, but it just couldn't do it.

Sigh.

I have all of those songs/artists on my Zune as well as the new age rock/headbang metal you described and I'm 26. Its the genre I listen to in the garage while working on the bikes. Its era appropriate. Pretty much listen to it all but I can't stand the new rap/hip hop.

Each generation is going to have opinions of the upcoming generation. I'm already thinking "WTF" to a lot of the new stuff coming out.

BTW. sohc4ever, lovin the avatar. By far one of my all time greatest movie.

It's long enough.....haven't heard it in awhile though. Does it have a nice long instrumental in there? I'm thinking the answer is YES!!......I'm thinking I'm gonna go in the other room and grab that CD for a listen......OK....I'm back. Made In Japan it is!! It says Child In Time  Mick.....not Sweet Child In Time.
