Neither do the rioters.  Once you get the "mob mentality", things get out of hand quickly.

i dont get it either , went home from work last night and all was well , arrived at the garage this morning to be greeted by three burnt out cars . every shop that didnt have shutters had its window smashed .  the police told me to close at 2 because they where expecting more trouble tonight . stayed till 6 same as usual and all seemed quiet . have spent the whole day moving motorbikes to safer places , not a good day , oh and have just found out my insurance [ that costs 10 grand a year ] doesn't cover me for civil unrest , bollocks

Just a bunch of stupid kids, their day will come.

On the up side, my best friend lives in hackney where it was reported as pretty bad last night, he didnt seem to understand what all the fuss was about. Not as bad as the media is making out.

Things are pretty bad and the media is covering only a part of it. It's spreading fast just like it was in the late 70s. I blame the nanny state. There's too much political correctness and wrapping people in cotton wool. Time to get the water cannon out to stop this stupidity and then bring back national service to teach the little fockers some respect for people and property.

To all you UK guys who live and work in the cities around the country, stay safe and out of trouble. Property is just property at the end of the day, it ain't worth losing life and limb over.

I'm heartened by the people coming out with brooms and shovels to help clean up if that keeps happening the "rioters" stand a better chance of running into some ones granny who'll let the whole family know about the  grandson, also if the community bands together then they will collectively suppress the "rioters" more effectively than the cops can or will.

Didn't this all start with the police shooting of Mike Duggan, who was unarmed and maybe shot by mistake?  The investigation is ongoing but that's the latest I saw.  I think there is more going on here than simple "hooligans in the streets".  I don't know the exact situation there but here we have war on the middle class being carried out by persons and institutions at the intersection of wealth and power.  It has nothing to do with political orientation as both sides are beholden to these powers.  You have government unresponsive to the issues of the middle class, completely at the whim of the wealthy.  It just seems that the anger is a little misdirected.  It needs to be directed at the people who brought about and benefited from the economic collapse, banksters, Wall Street honchos, CEO's and owners of large companies who use their wealth to influence politics for their own benefit at the expense of all the rest, media moguls, those that benefit from needless wars that we always seem to be involved in that they themselves usually instigate, etc.   Maybe it's time these folks and their neighborhoods were paid a little visit.
I am beginning to think that we need an "Arab Spring" here and maybe there too.

I heard some British politician quoted as saying that the "kids" who were rioting were doing so because of their "sense of entitlement and the belief that their actions had no consequences".

I just can't imagine where these kids are finding the examples that foster these notions...... ::)

srust I agree completely with what you said.We do need an arab spring here. The youth of today in this country are pacified by the 3 screens(cellphone, computer,tv)and could not be bothered.Where is the anger about what the superrich are doing to us all.poverty=crime.
its better to regret something you have done, than something you havent.Except playing with explosives.

I wouldn't lay all the blame on the young.  You have a portion of the population that these oligarchs have convinced that the enemy is their neighbors, coworkers, minorities, and the poor, people in their own socio-economic class or lower.   And as they engineer the economic crisis and shovel the money upward these deluded folks are happy to oblige, bent over with their pants down to their knees.

I think you will see more of this kind of stuff as the months go by, people getting sick and tired of being lied to by the #$%*heads in power continuing illegal wars, austerity measures, giving the general shaft to the commoner.

Reading this discussion made me think of this paragraph from Orwell's 1984:

'If there is hope,' wrote Winston, 'it lies in the proles.'

If there was hope, it MUST lie in the proles, because only there in those swarming disregarded masses, 85 per cent of the population of Oceania, could the force to destroy the Party ever be generated. The Party could not be overthrown from within. Its enemies, if it had any enemies, had no way of coming together or even of identifying one another. Even if the legendary Brotherhood existed, as just possibly it might, it was inconceivable that its members could ever assemble in larger numbers than twos and threes. Rebellion meant a look in the eyes, an inflexion of the voice, at the most, an occasional whispered word. But the proles, if only they could somehow become conscious of their own strength. would have no need to conspire. They needed only to rise up and shake themselves like a horse shaking off flies. If they chose they could blow the Party to pieces tomorrow morning. Surely sooner or later it must occur to them to do it? And yet...!
