Local legend found - a story
« on: August 16, 2011, 05:08:25 AM »
Two years ago, in the state of New Hampshire a legend was born.

While working on a 1974 CB750 with some buddies our attention was
drawn to the police scanner....
*everything is paraphrased as I don't recall the exact wording from 2 years ago....

Police scanner conversation:

Speeder on a large Suzuki is heading heading south on Route 12,

riding on his back wheel,

speed on radar 115mph

my location is parking lot of The Summit Restuarant*

---Do you have a description?

Rider is helmeted with black helmet,
blue motorcycle,
brown jacket,

-----license plate number?

Starting pursuit.
Lights , siren on.
Speeder is accelurating,
speed is now 140mph,

155 mph,

165 mph,

can not keep up...

---Please be advised to break off pursuit.

Breaking off pursuit.
Will start checking major sideroads as I am
now in the Westmoreland straight-away.
after Keene dump and see no sign of speeder.

---affirmative, officiers on the way.
---Major intersetions at Route 101 are being monitored.
---Please stand by.

----Walpole Keene have been apprised of situation.

Speeder not found at dump.

---State Police, Keene NH apprised of situation

(at this point we were all cheering him on, and opened some more beers while my cb750 called for attention)

---State Police Rockingham  apprised of situation.
---Road block set up on NH/VT lines in Westminster, Bellows Falls, Walpole, Keene, Brattleboro, Hinsdale
---Local police departments of Bellows Falls, Walpole, Keene, Chesterfield, Brattleboro, Hinsdale, Claremont,  be on
lookout for loud blue Suzuki, non-stock exhaust system, rider description will follow....

(well for 2 hours we listened as more and more police departments in a widening area were notified of this evil man. He was again
clocked at speeds of 160mph + twice in the area. He was never caught)

(want my opinion? I think what the heck, he was just having fun cruising around, harming no one and the roads at that hour were
vertually deserted. No one was harmed. I've done those speeds and I probably would have done the same thing, as to get caught means jail time and I don't like jails.)

(met the rider yesterday. He is a nice guy with a family now, so he's slowed down and sold the 1100 Suzuki.)
peace,
michel

How did you manage to find him or confirm that it was him?

Funny story...

Yah that was a good story. One of those type incidents were you root for the biker. What were his comments on that night and how did you actually identify him? Are you sure it was him and not a wannabe?

I suppose I'll be in the minority here and likely pilloried for expressing my opinion, but this guy was no hero in my book - he was a squid who makes being a motorcyclist all the more difficult for the rest of us.

And, yes, I went through the "10 feet tall and bulletproof" phase in my youth as well, but I'm not proud of it.  It wasn't brave - it was stupid.

Rusty, for one thing "squid" is not being properly used here.

As to the identity of the biker, I just happened to mention it in passing
while in a local store,
The guy behind the counter said sheepishly (kiwi's , no offense meant here),
without bragging nor pontificating  braggart verbiage,
 Uhmmm, yeah that was me.
  And he told me
in detail how he managed to elude the authorities for 2+ hours at speeds in excess of 165mph.
Once he told me how, then I KNEW it was him.

peace,
michel

Here's the definition of "squid" I, among others, subscribe to:

Quote
A SQUID is a motorcycle rider who, experienced or not, rides outside his abilities and/or sets poor examples by attire, propriety, and general behavior on the motorcycle.

In this context, I believe my usage of the term is appropriate.

Squid is subjective of course.. There is a saying that goes something like "anyone driving slower then you is a jerk and anyone going faster then you is an idiot."  Either way at that speed he most have the ability part of that equation down pat otherwise he would have "seen jesus" so to speak.

Nice guy with a family huh?  His actions could have easily led to the injury or death of someone elses family if they had been on that road.  All I see is a reckless idiot.  Too bad they didn't catch him.  If you want to do this kind of stunt do it in a controlled environment and not on public roads where you can endanger others.

lighten up guys! It's not Michel was the rider for crying out loud!

Personally I thought the funny part was that he managed to find the guy 2 years later without even really looking for him!

You guys wanna preech road safety and responsible riding then I think it is better aimed at another forum. The VAST majority of us on here are riding bikes that wouldn't touch those speeds if we were riding downhill with the wind toward a magnet factory!!

Just my 2 cents worth...

I'm not bashing Michel.  I firmly believe that type of driving belongs on a track, not the street.

It's got nothing to do with Michel.  Just saying the guys actions were reckless and dangerous and could have led to the injury or death of innocent people.  Sure it's a funny coincident on finding him but that's about it.

Hardly a local legend more like village idiot.

I'm in the reckless driving is for idiots camp. The guy could've plowed over granny or some kids crossing the road that, at 160mph he would've never seen in time. Even if he hit a car at those speeds he could've inflicted serious F'ing damage. Naw, I'll call the cops myself when I see people driving that fast.

Wether doing good or bad..sounds like a legend to me.
Not supporting anything here, but its a bit like climbing mountains.. they do it because they can..

Sounds like the guy doing this was doing it at an appropriate time, if such a thing exists..

As long as they build 160mph bikes.. someone will ride them at that speed.
I had a buddy that rode cb 750s like that, and later an XS11.. too bad he is no longer with us. He was a great rider, never hurt the general public.. did get me hard once though.. but we were in that together..
He would ride his 750 as fast as it would go.. a lot of the time..

Ok, I know this is knocking the English language and I am English.

Your use of the word LEGEND in the title, here's my take on it.

LEG END, the only part of the human body that has a Bottom at the top. ;D ;D ;D

This guy is a AH and D..k, they are also found at the top of a leg end.

If this fella eluded all those police for that long at that rate of speed, I'd say he wasn't riding out of his abilities.  As for endangering others...that late at night in Vermont?  I'd say he was endangering Rocky Racoon and himself more than other people.  If he wants to risk his own life, it is HIS life after all.  No point in debating it.  Might as well shake your finger at folks that don't wear helmets.  Oh DEAR GOD, there goes another one of those motorcycle-riding whackos that don't wear full leathers!!   Must...fight...temptation...to...lecture....burn soapbox....

Hell he was probably a cop at the time.   They probably DID catch his ass, made him do a beer bong, and timed how long he held his next wheelie.
Just call me Timmaaaaay!!!
