cb550 clutch basket and cover fit a cb500???
« on: May 04, 2005, 04:22:57 PM »
hey guys!
quick question... i know that the cb550 clutch is for all accounts beter than the stock cb500. now will the cb550 basket and cover fit the cb500 engine, if so than it would be an easy swap, plug the plunger hole and go? with out having both engines on hand its hard to figure it out.. .jut though someone had thought about it or done it. thanks joe

If I remember my CB500/550's, the clutch on the 550 is actually on the opposite side of the engine.

It's not so much the clutch that's better on the 550 as it is the entire transmission.  Don't ask me why - I'm sure someone here knows though.

You could always swap your 500 engine out for a 550, or a 650 for that matter.

hey, the clutch is on the same side, just the 500's activator (plunger) origanates on the left side where the 550 has a top pull on the right side. your right, i could just swap the engines but thats another 300 bucks for an already 1000.00 project... lol thanks for the reply

Right right - forgot about the troublesome shaft running through the CB500's engine block  ::)  Funny how it took years for some new kid to walk into the Honda engineering dept. and suggest simply moving the cable 30 years ago  ;D

Nope it wont fit, different number of teeth and the crancase is a different shape as well so you are stuck with the 500 pushrod unless you fit a complete 550 engine.
