newbie intro & sticky brake caliper question
« on: May 07, 2006, 11:41:45 AM »
Hello everybody.
First of all I would like to say that this a wonderful site loaded with all types of useful and informative info on these SOHC bikes and the people that are running it should be highly congratulated.I have a 1975 cb400f that I bought last year . At that time it had 6800 miles on it and now has 8300, is all original( although I did buy a new exhaust from DS spares)and runs, handles and starts great. Now for the question. I have replaced the brake lines because they were 31 years old and I thought it was time to get new ones. On reassembling my caliper I notice the active pad does not return, so I disassemble and clean out the piston seal groove better. Now it says on Oldmanhondas link that the piston should slide in and out by hand in the bore with the seal in. What I would like to know is how freely that piston should slide because I am thinking there has to be some friction for a proper seal. On mine it will slide in with moderate pressure but needs to be tapped on the palm of your hand to slide out. Is that good enough or is that still to tight? By the way I bought a Motion Pro hydraulic brake bleeder  (25 $ Cdn )that fits on your bleeder line for this and it worked great.
Thank you very much and safe riding everybody.

It sounds loose enough to me. If the pivot arm is ok and you cleaned the groove for the seal, you should be alright.
