Battery Issues
« on: August 29, 2011, 07:08:58 PM »
My cb550k doesnt seem to want to hold a charge... ive had some trouble getting it started due to a bad choke cable, i think. but when trying to get it started the battery dies after a few attempts to get it started. is this normal, or is it a bad battery, or a short somewhere?

Check the voltage at the battery at 4000rpm

How old is this battery? Is it maintenance free, or does it have caps on it?

If the battery condition in unknown...you are better sourcing a known good one (or new) to start in order to have a good starting point to perform checks on all electrics.  If you have a known good battery then you can start the process of elimination as you go through you electric test checklist.

You may want to source a good volt-multimeter too...

What is the voltage at 4000 rpm?  If you have never used a multimeter, now is a good time to start.  The skill will pay for itself in about 30 seconds.

I would hate to see you buy a new battery needlessly if the charging system is kaput (technical term) and the battery can be saved with a slow, overnight charge.
