Steering Bearing Removal Clarification
« on: September 05, 2011, 12:38:54 PM »
I'm getting ready to tackle a steering bearing replacement.  Going to All Balls tapered bearings.  I'd just like some clarification on removal.  I see lots of posts talking about banging out the steering bearings.  I don't see anyone using a blind bearing puller.  I borrowed one from an auto parts store to remove my wheel bearings (success), and I'm wondering if this would be the more appropriate way to get the steering bearings out?  Are you guys not using this due to limited access to one, or is the beat 'em out method the better way to go?  Thanks.

I just think it's easier to bang them out. The cups are much larger in the head than the wheels. I used to work at a bicycle shop and we always just knocked them out. Some sort of cup press is nice to have when reinstalling them though. My all balls cups were kind of a pain to get to seat correctly. I guess what I'm saying is the choice is yours.

Seriously, the lip on the upper and lower CB750 races are pretty good size. I just used a long drift (flat head punch). Just take your time going around the race so you don't wedge one side farther than the other. Pretty easy process...
