Well here is my story.

Back in January I decided it was time to get back on a bike after a two year break. I wanted something classic and I started to google around a bit. I found out a lot about cafe racers and I discovered the Honda CB750 through many websites such as Carpies, Dime City, Do the Ton and of course SOHC4.

So i started looking for a good stock CB750 Project bike, and found this one on eBay.

Two grand later and it was in my garage - a CB750F2 Supersport - which meant nothing to me as I knew nothing about CB750 Hondas at this stage.

But I had an idea how I wanted it to look, so I began work.

What I did...

I stripped the seat, tank, fairings, headlamp, instruments, indicators and air filter box off the bike.

I cut the rear end out of the chassis.

I fabricated a new custom seat pan from scratch.

I sourced a CB750 K series tank, clip on handlebars, new grips, new headlamp and new indicators.

Then I needed work done outside - so Craig from The Mischief Makers in Melbourne took on the project to clean up my tank and make it fit, and to add some metal to my rear end to match my seat pan.

Next post...

Chapter Two,

So Craig had my bike for a while...

Craig did a great job on the rear end, and welded on a chassis to fit my seat pan nicely. It is a real feature on the bike.

Craig also put a lot of work into the tank, including the custom mounts and the new petcock outlets (as the original outlet was in a bad spot).

So from Craig's workshop, the tank came back to me and the rest of the bike went over to Christian at Modern Motorcycle in Collingwood, Melbourne.

Christian did the re-wiring of the new gauges, headlamp, indicators, alarm and he re-jetted the carbs, re-positioned the choke, made up various brackets and did a lot of other minor work.

Meanwhile - my hand made seat pan was off getting upholstered to my design in brown vinyl at Australian Cumfy Motorcycle Seats.

And the tank was with my good mate Mitch - the best man with a paint gun I have ever known.

Mitch painted the fuel tank, oil tank, front fender, left hand side plate and headlamp bowl. Cream paint with copper detail - and what a superb paint job it is. Smooth as silk. super glossy and perfect mirror finish.

more to come...

The other thing I wanted was some brass...

So I went with custom made brass velocity stacks from Steel Dragon Performance - thanks Mike, your work is amazing and you have given my bike a unique feature.

Okay - painting done, assembly underway, and I need to find a few things, such as maybe a better top triple than the one I have -

- and that is how I found you all!

Many thanks to ffjMoore for selling me the shaved and filled top triple I found when I googled, and thanks to him I found my way to SOHC4.

Whilst on this forum, I also found the 12" shorty reverse cone muffler I wanted (Lossa Engineering).

And best of all - I met Terry.

Without Terry, my bike would not be running, the man is an absolute gentleman, live ten minutes away from me and will go out of his way to help a fellow SOHC4 rider. Thanks mate!

So - here are the photos I took today of the bike.

Things left to do:

1/. Get #1 carb running right (the bike does run on three now and again).

2/. Find a rear set solution (the Raasks I bought don't fit).

Eventually, take the Comstars off and get them powder coated black.

So - that is the story of the 'High Tea Racer' my first ever bike build. I will be keeping this one for a while as I plan to do a serious stage two rebuild with a strip down to naked frame and an engine rebuild with more performance in mind.

Thanks to everyone on this forum who read my thread and helped me on my way.

Maduncle (Cliff).

maduncle, nice bike. I love the F's. IMO the silver Comstars look good and work well with the rest of your build.

Thanks for the consideration for BOTM, I'm certainly flattered. This bike won't please everybody, but that why this place is so cool, there's something for everyone. I also need to credit Turboguzzi for sharing ideas along the way.

After a 35 year absence from roadracing I decided it was time to get back to it. Originally I had several options in mind as far as what to build, but the decision became easier after I finished a CB592 for my wife four years back (actually it was a BOTM winner) . I never had much to do with the Honda middleweight having always ridden a 750K3 from new, but her bike is a blast to ride. That and the fact that I had a shop full of 500/550 parts when I was done tipped the scales.

So I had four goals,
1) End up with a finished dry weight as close to 325lbs as possible, without resorting to craziness.
2) Build a stout engine to the edge of the legal class limit.
3) Improve braking without adding weight.
4) Build spoked wheels, and best handling/suspension components again within class limits.

Works Performance shocks, 14.25" in length, CB750F2 forks (in like new condition) RaceTech springs & emulators, 15W fork oil and Tarrozzi fork brace. It took considerable time to set up the front suspension, but it works very well for old stuff. Of course machined new brass swingarm pivots and tapered brgs in the steering head.

Excel 18" WM3 front rim with Avon 90/90/18 race tire, rear is a WM4 with an Avon 130/65/18. The stock discs are thinned to 5mm and with all the extra machining weigh fully 2lbs less than original. Brembo dual piston FO5 calipers, 20mm hollow front axle and a Brembo 12mm master cylinder. In the rear I used a CB350 twin hub (1lb less) with race shoes.

I attached a lightweight fibreglass seat to an aluminum base to raise it 1" off the frame rails. The rear of the seat hooks to a frame member between the upper shock mounts and one bolt attaches the seat front/rear tank (400F tank- 1lb lighter)

The tach is early GSXR, fairing is a survivor from the seventies. Steering damper, fairing bracket seen here.

Reasets are a mish/mash of Honda/Suzuki/ homemade stuff. The problem with this is you have to duplicate them for spares in case of a crash. Should have thought about that before.  :P

Sorry guys there is more... later though.

Wow bwaller - that is superb.

The bike is so well thought out and put together - I only hope my little CB450 project can be as clean and crisp and beautifully engineered as this bike of yours.

Well done!

3 beautiful machines here - really enjoying the build summaries.
Life is precious: wear your f'n helmet!
There's nothing more expensive than a free bike...
FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.
