Why such UGLY mufflers?
« on: September 17, 2011, 10:43:26 AM »
Modern sport bikes have ugly garbage can mufflers, why?

Modern computer aided design and machining but no skills of forming metal.
Companies like Honda,Kawaski ,Suzuki etc.,. need to hire skilled metal workers and designers. Right now they must have car people running the show.

Motorcycles from the 1970's had much better design and metal working WITHOUT any computers! Check out the photo examples below.

The mufflers are the MOST expensive I have seen in my lifetime and are UGLY too!
They cost anywhere from $700-$1500. dollars!!! Cheeeessshhhh.
Even a after market 4 into 1 exhaust for a Honda CB750 is only $400-$600 and that is a fair price for
headers and muffler.

Two different species there seems to account fo :-[r this to me.
Hybrids are getting more popular though. The whole "motard" thing kinda maks me wanna puke but some of the most amazing bikes to ride are hidden behinnd the hideousness and vice versa. Some of the keenest lookers are uncomfortable poor performing death traps. Form or function ? Always a bit of a compremise .

it seems to be a fad to have carbon fiber or some other junk in a can format  (ugly as sin)

Because they work, and unlike the pipes from the 1970's, they don't rust out after one winter. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Manufacturers are mounting the exhaust lower because the "moto GP" look is in style and the sales reps can claim this (insert latest sport bike here) has better handling and a lower center of gravity compared to previous year models which is most likely true... But it's funny because if a sport bike is on public roads, it cannot be used to its full potential so the advantages are not noticeable for the majority of riders.  A lot of consumers like the exhaust as it has a futuristic streamline look to it versus the high mounted round or oval cylinder design cans, that i personally like. They are working on unifying all parts of the bike to bring design and performance together smoothly.

The local Honda dealer says the new low mounted overly designed exhaust pipes are being well received.  By who? I don't quite know but it is not me.

Prices are ridiculous and will continue to be that way.   even when they come out with "vintage" or "retro" lines of round/oval aluminum cans in a few years once the market is completely flooded with carbon fiber exhaust, you will pay a pretty penny for the "classic" pipe haha.

Just my thoughts.
