removing stock mufflers from a cb650
« on: September 18, 2011, 06:12:17 PM »
I just picked up a 1979 cb650 and the mufflers are rotted right off the pipes. There's still 3 or 4 inches of the muffler left on the pipes, though. Any tips on removing those short chunks so I can install some new slipon mufflers? I'm just wondering if I should just cut the pipes off or should I try to grind off the muffler remnants so I leave the pipes at their original length.

well you usually only loose about an inch and a quarter when you cut them but you can't do that only so many times before they are too short

It depends really on how long the slipons are that you want to install there are some pretty long ones out there that may require that you cut more off and there are some stubby ones that you will wish you had the extra length

so you kinda need to decide first what kind you want to put on  but cutting them right behind the welds usually works pretty well

I use a cobalt enhanced metal cutting blade in a saws all
blue mol  is cheap and works well and can be found a TSC

you can also use a steel cutting pipe cutter  that will do a nicer job but will require slightly more to be cut off for it to work

Um... yeah.. no cutting until you have your new slip-ons in hand!  Then see where you want them positioned.  You may end up cutting off more than originally planned.
Come on!  We're burning daylight!
