Work in progress . . . stupid kickstart!!!!
« on: May 11, 2006, 05:57:36 AM »
Hey everyone . . . well yesterday was the day off so I ripped into the bike. Got the tappet cover back from the bike shop and they did a pretty crappy weld job so I had to clean that up with the dremil and some files.   anyways. . . . got the top of the engine back together,  installed the carbs WITH the complete airbox for the first time, what a pain in the patoot!!! had to take the battery tray out and jimmy the thing in back ways. Is there a trick to those or what?
Ok now for a quick question. . . I took the clutch cover off to clean up and paint, someone did a crappy gasket job so it was best I took it off anyways.   The first time I re-installed the clutch housing/ kickstart it wouldnt kick the engine over! WTF??  Took it all off again and that kickstart is a pain to get off (again . . . any tricks/tips?). Put the kickstart on without the housing,  clutch turns but doesnt engage.  Aaaha!! the new clutch cable adjusting screw was the wrong one, took it out and let the clutch cable just hang. . . bingo! it turns. put it all back together again , beat the kickstart on with a little bal-peen hammer and now . . . . . the freaking recoil spring doesnt work!! ahhh!!!  it kicks over, but won't return!  dammit!!!  yeah basically, time to do it again.  Its like this bike has some voodoo over it.  anyways, any tips? thanks guys!

I have a 74 cb550 I hope you are talking about your your cb500.  remember to always state  model size and year of your bike. with that said it seems there is a little metal tab around the middle of the assembly. If it is like the 550.  one side of the tab sticks outside the  diameter of the assembly. That tab should go into a slot that is cast into the case.  that might be why there is no recoil on the spring, because there was never any tension on the spring.  there is no real easy way to put these kickstarts on when still in the bike.  If you have small hands you are somewhat blessed for this operation but that is about all.  good luck there should be more comments about you troubles
