I noticed that also. I figured they were trying to decide if they knew me or not, after all, why would someone wave if they didn't know you?  :)

Why wouldn't you wave to to a trike rider, he may have been riding longer than you've been alive. I wave at everything and sometimes get a wave back. Interestingly in Washington I get more waves than in B.C., even from the chopper guys. In B.C. they will wave at my HD riding partner but the hand comes down quick when they see our Goldwing. Too funny.
To make sure Goldwing owners are friendly to others, a new accessory is being tested. See below.

Back in '97, I was out of gas late one evening on the side of a road. Granted, this happened to me a couple of times on that solo trip around the country, but usually I don't expect anyone to stop for a guy in black leathers pushing his bike along the road to hide it behind an overpass or something so he can go in hunt of a gas station.  Granted, I was just sort of wingin it on my route and seemed to find the roads that went 50+ miles without civilization..

Anyway, I wrote all that to write this: The only person that ever stopped to help me out was a dude on a funky trike with a keg for a gas tank sitting on top of what I was guessing was a VW engine.  He puled over, pulled a rubber tube out of compartment somewhere and asked me for my little gas can (yea, I ran through my reserve AND the 1gal spare I had strapped out back.. ???).
He filled it twice out of his keg, made sure my bike cranked, then asked if I had any "smoke". I was actually sorry I could not hook 'em up.. but then he asked if I wanted to share one before getting back on the road.  I declined as uncle sugar frowns pretty hard on that sort of thing.  All this on the side of some random road. I passed on the smoke and we headed off.  He waved and kept cruisin' when I pulled off at the next gas station. He was on his way home from some rally or gathering or something.

So, yea, I wave to trike riders. Especially the funky ones.

I guess the Can-Am's count too?

I've been rideing a moped around while i'm working on the cb, have yet to have a guy on a chopper/HD wave.

Guess i'm not worthy? it's got 2 wheels and a motor, I would call it a motorcycle.

I like to wave to everyone. Interesting, sometimes older men pass me and give a thumbs up or a wave and they are driving trucks or the family mini van. Fellow motorcycle riders almost always wave and I find the HD riders WAVE 50% of the time. BSA and triumph riders almost always wave or come over to chat at the gas station or local hangout. Fellow SOHC guys always wave( so far 100% in my experience). I like to be friendly to everyone in case I ever break down perhaps someone will pull over to lend a hand good karma maybe.

I wave at everyone, usually first, unless I'm in a situation where I'm needing my hand on the bar (corner, clutching, etc). For just straight-ahead riding along? I wave at everyone. Just the lazy, left hand off the bar, dropping a bit lower and two or three fingers out. I'll say I get >75% returns.

*WARNING - the following is UNSAFE BEHAVIOR while riding a motorcycle*
Recently, when I'm approaching someone who I suspect isn't going to wave (hard core sport bikers, hard core Harley riders) I'll go overboard and lift that arm WAY off the bar, wave my hand, and sometimes lift my left foot off the peg and partially stick my leg out at 'em as well. Sorry, but a guy did that to me one time and I had to pull over I was laughing so hard... Since then, I do it when it looks like they're going to be too serious.

I look back in my mirror, and I can just TELL they're looking in theirs to see who that guy was, and wondering if they knew me.

Whenever my son and I are riding together, he usually rides behind me, and I can see him shaking his head...     ;D   ;D   ;D

 Haaahaaa, I have to try that next time on those Hard-Core-Bad-Ass-Harley-Ducati- Beemer riders that refuse to wave at me on my ancient machine!

My kids are just getting out of bed and wondering why I'm laughing so hard.
BTW, if it has two wheel I wave, yes bicycles too.

I always wave to the scooters and bikes, i remember being a kid and lusting after a bike so badly i could taste it and the closest i could get was the odd freindly rider or guy that would pull a wheelie for you.
