Me too! I want a CB550F rebuild of my own.
« on: September 26, 2011, 06:37:55 am »
Background of the bike: I picked up a 1975 CB550F from my uncle two weeks ago. It's been sitting in Grandma's garage for 6 years now with no one to love on it. Before being parked it had an electrical issue with either the stator or the rectifier.

My background: I'm a pure computer geek and have little to no mechanical talent. I had a 98' Wide Glide a few years back but the only things I attempted were oil changes, seat replacement, new grips, and replaced a throttle cable.

Right now, I don't a have a particular look that I'm aiming for. I like the Cafe Racer look but feel my lower back couldn't handle any long rides. The Brat Style look is different and appealing, and then the bobber look is cool as well.

Question: The engine has 32k listed and was running fine before the electrical issue. Should I even touch the engine besides cleaning?

It may have been best to determine if she was running properly before tearing it down...But, that kind of mileage isn't a deal breaker...you may want to do a light top end refresh (check clearances, new rings, hone cylinders, valve lap, new gaskets).
