coil wiring modification?

i noticed this in the FAQ section of the site and it has me intrigued. i was wondering what size wire to use though with this setup and also was wondering if these are the parts its talking about using.

30 amp relay

More power to the coils and a brighter spark.

On the models with a points ignition system, the spark on the spark plugs can be improved by feeding the coils with power directly from the battery via an 30 Amp auto light relay (you can also use a double relay with one power wire to each coil). That makes it possible do increase the diamter on the power wires to the coil, and there will be no power loss.

thanks again. ill go ahead and post what it said incase someone else is curious as well

For the automotive relay. pig tail, and Fuse Holder I used radio shack part numbers :
12VDC/40A SPST Automotive Relay
Model:275-001  |  Catalog #: 275-001

Crimestopper XX-SRS Prewired Relay Socket
Model: XX-SRS  |  Catalog #: 55017871

30A 12/24VDC Mini Blade In-Line Fuse Holder
Model: 270-015  |  Catalog #: 270-015

I had the 12 ga and 16 ga wire on hand as well as the shrink wrap and crimp terminals.

Here is the new harness.
 Note: I did not alter the stock harness at all.




Pretty cut and dry so far.

Attach the 36" battery feed at the starter switch as shown here:

installed it should look like this;

run the 36" battery along the same path as the stock harness up to the coils. I heat shinked all the wires and zip tied them in place.
this pic shows where I mounted the relay:


wiring is simple. Attach the ground wire to the coil bracket mounting bolt.

Hook the ignition control wire to the red/black wire that originally hooked to the coil. You only need one so unhook the  lead on the right hand coil and insulate it to prevent future issues.

Attach the coil leads to the coils where you removed the stock red/black wire.

Thats it. It really is that easy.

Notice that the stock wiring is still in place and if for some reason the relay should fail you can easily hook it back up and ride away

got it wired and tested and works great. i am wondering though what would be the best way to splice the the 2 coil wires and the main wire going to the coils? im trying to look for a y connector or something but i cant seem to find anything
