cb500/4 Gear selection issue
« on: September 27, 2011, 10:27:48 PM »
Hello All,

My race bike developed an issue last meeting (Barry Sheene Festival of Speed at Eastern Creek, Sydney).

I can no longer select 3rd gear. 1st to 2nd is OK. 2nd to 3rd = neutral. Shift again and I get 4th.

On the way down the same. 4th to 3rd neutral. Shift down again and I get 2nd.

Does anyone know what this could be before I take the motor apart?

Thanks

Robert
Regards

Robert

shift fork gone and new ones are not easy to find

can be hard welded and reground, would undercut the dogs as a prevention....

This happened to me in the 1981 Manx GP, and when i stripped the bike the 3 engaging dogs had come off 3rd gear, still think i have the bits will try and photo them if i can find them.

Robert, drop the oil , then take the sump off and see if the dogs are there.

Thanks for the input.

I have drained the oil, but not taken the sump off yet.

Sorry, I should have said it is a 72 CB500/4.

Typical Cb500 gearcluster problem with 3rd and 4th , we had the same problems.
We now use a CB350K gearcluster , same ratios as the 500 but partly undercut.
I bought also two complete spare gearclusters on Ebay , but you also need the 350K clutch hub !
