Torque value: side cover bolts CB500
« on: September 29, 2011, 08:09:05 AM »
Been replacing all of the old screws on the motor with stainless Allen bolts. The instructions that came with the set said to use anti-seize (of course) and that the torque value for the 6mm ones is 4.4 ft/lbs. You know, the CB500 is a wet sump engine, so the RH side cover holds in the oil. Is 4.4 ft/lbs enough torque to keep it from leaking? Seems on the light side. But I recall reading something about there being lower torque required when using anti-seize. Is that right?

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

BTW it doesn't say in the Honda manual. Maybe in the Clymer or Haynes?

Lower torque required with anti seize is correct.  Get 'em snug, and if you see a leak, give 'em an extra snugging..

My rule of thumb on these is to use as little as possible. A good uh with a T handle. If they leak, give it a skosh more.

I've never seen a torque value or any other guidance.

There is a torque value in manual, your looking at it wrong.
 It's a generic spec for 6mm screws.
6mm bolts are 5-7 ft/lbs, screws will work at same torque but it's usually 4-6ft/lbs (working from memory, may be slightly off?)
The torque may be given in inch pounds

I'd agree with that.

Scroll down to the pan screws. Quite a wide range. Roughly equivalent to a good "uh" with a T handle.  :D

Don't forget, the screws and bolts are measured by shank size not head/socket size (eg, 6mm bolt has 8 or 10mm head)
5.1 to 8 ft/lbs is quite a wide range for a small screw

i never torque any of the smaller size bolts, just snug them down then a pinch more, sometimes my elbow goes "click"at the correct torque.
