What year did they stop using points on stock bikes??
« on: September 29, 2011, 01:42:14 PM »
Hey folks; What year did they stop using points on our 4 bangers? I'm looking for a 4cyl. bike for my wife. She currently has a 1985 Rebel that died (CDI I think) and she wants it gone because she has ridden my 1976 cb750 and wants to move up to a 4 cylinder bike so it will sound like mine :) . I built my own muffler that sounds like Thunder rumbling and she's fell in love with the sound of my monster and wants the power increase of the 4 cylinders as well. I'm old school and don't really care for these new (stock) electronics Ie; CDI,Pulse generator and the like. New CDI for her bike (if you can find it is $100+ ) !! Points, carb, HUH, Simple ! So long story short, I'm trying to find an older 4 cyl. bike (Honda of course) for her but I don't want the electronic crap. I would do the searching, but I  have to use dial up out here in the boonies and with all you have to go through looking for that info for all the models, well I'm to lazy for that (I guess)  ;D !   Thanks for your help !    ...cougar...

The 650's were the only sohc4's that came stock with a points-less ignition.

This is kind of off topic, Cougar, but by any chance were you in San Fransisco the summer of 1997 on your home-made honda chopper headed to a rainbow gathering, and if so, did you try to spend the night at a hostel somewhere around Folsom down in the Mission district but it was full, and if so, did these two recent high school grads touring the country in a conversion van who were staying at the hostel let you and your lady sleep in their van since it had been broken into the previous two nights in a row?  If so, that would be really awesome.  I was the kid with the long hair.  If not, I guess there's more than one Cougar with a honda chopper....   Imagine that!

Hey ; Ok I'll start at the top.    TwoTired; 1979 Thanks, that will ease my search for her new,LOL, Honda !     Gordon; Sorry for my not being knowledged on SOHC Honda's. I've only had my SOHC cb750 for about 3 years and have not learned much about the smaller ones.      jessezm; No sorry, the last time I was in California was about 1976-77 or so.   If I've done it right, here will be a couple of pics of my bike. My bikes name is "State of Flux" 'cause it's always changing. Matter of fact it's changed since I took these pics !   ...cougar...
