Doing the "Honda" Stencil on the back of a seat (Black Bomber)
« on: October 03, 2011, 08:25:11 PM »
I got the stencil off ebay for about $5.
The directions are as follows.
Clean
Place stencil
Mask Stencil
paint (NOT NOT NOT with "American Traditions" paint for plastic) Frigging never cured
remove stencil (carefully cut any spots where the paint built up too much)

That looks great!  I need to do that on my seats. What paint did you use?
I have a buddy who who has a sign business. I'm been trying to get him to make me some Honda stencils like that.
He can cut or print any vinyl.  All he needs is the vector graphic.  I'm working on that...
Do you have a copy of the Honda Shop Manual or Parts List for your bike? Get one here:

I too have successfully used these stencils on the seats of several bikes.  The paint I used with success was the Krylon Fusion brand for plastic.  On a DOHC 750, it matched the colour exactly to a stock 1974 CB350F that I have by using the "42338 Nickel Shimmer" colour that Krylon comes in.  This shade as on my CB350F (and likely similar to other SOHC-4 models) is somewhat silvery, almost a bronze shade, rather than white as I seem to recall the earlier Hondas from the 60's.  At any rate, what I used on the DOHC 750 looks identical to the 350F.

pretty sure you wanna use a lacquer based paint for plastic/vinyl/rubber...the solvents evaporate fast enough that they don't get into the material
If it works good, it looks good...

I also read that some people do 7 or so coats. YIKES. Paint would be about .04 thick and practically bury the stencil. PITA to remove stencil. OK, so laquer based paint, be sure to wax and grease remover before paint, do a few light coats....until you like the look. I dont think the stock lettering was WHITE but more like..white-ish? silver?

I just did the stencil and I used a flat white. It looks good, not perfect but good. I agree, it's an off white, silver color but I couldn't find anything like that and I'm colorblind. I wouldn't have known if my wife hadn't said it wasn't white but that's life.
